2500 LD WHINES THRU 1ST

I just bought a 2002 LD 6.0/4L80E with 72000 miles that has a pretty loud noise/whine pretty much all the way through 1st gear on takeoff. It starts off louder and fades before the 1-2 shift. Strangely enough, it is louder if you are turning. The noise definitely is coming from a rotating part by the way it sounds. I'm no stranger to vehicles or mechanics, but I haven't figured this one out yet. Any help?

Hydromatics "whine" in first gear by nature and if fades away before it shift (pitch goes higher and not as audable) THe fact it seema loader around a turn suggests a bad tranny mount that is transfering more of the noise to the frame in a turn when weight shifts.

I hear what you're saying about normal 1st gear whine, I just feel this is abnormally loud. It's of course a hard thing to describe, but it is not a smooth consistant whine, but a more ragged or course sounding whine. It appears to come from the trans tunnel, but that's allways hard to say, too.

It could be the planetary gear set in tranny starting to fail and getting a bit rough (that would not be good news) but check all mounts first.

I'll do that, if I can get the wife to stop by the shop long enough. She dumped her minivan so fast she didn't even want to go back and get it after I had her pick up the truck! I guess I get to see it in the driveway when I get home at night.

I do not have that problem, I make my wife buy the gas out of her budget if she drives it and she sticks to her 4 banger and makes me drive the truck or burb when needed so I have to "pay" for it.
