Recommended Posts

FRONT

1: jack up and remove front wheels

2: remove caliper, there is a 10mm bolt that hold the break line-remove

3: disconect abs sensor at top of frame

4: remove shock

5: remove tie rod end with either 15mm or 18mm socket. you'll have to pop the ball joint out. give 1 good wack to the spindle with a hammer, it will pop right out.

6: put a jack under lower control arm and lift it up a little

7: remove swaybar end link

8: losen lower ball joint nut, do not remove all the way. lower the jack. turn spindle. use a hammer and hit lower part of spindle to free the ball joint. nut will catch it.

9: put the jack back under lower control arm and raise it up. finish removing the nut. now slowly let the control arm down. move the spindle out of the way when it's free. keep lowering the arm all the way down. (truck should be high enough on jack stand to allow this) you may have to puch the control arm down once the jack is removed. spring will pop out.

10: install spring and reverse process.

if you are having trouble with the balljoint turning while removing the nut, get a crowbar or big screw driver to apply tension to it.

REAR

1: jack up rear of truck till spring is nutral. do not let the tire come off the ground

2: remove hitch if you have one

3: losen rear shackle bolts, top and bottom.

4: with no tenstion on lower bolt, remove it.

5: now sloly let the truck down watching the spring raise up towards the bed. once high enough, you'll be able to pull the bolt from above the frame.

6: remove old shackle and install new one. reverse the process on install

Re: Rear shackle hanger removal...on my 01 2500HD the shackle hangers were riveted to the frame and a real pain to remove.  Are the hangers bolted on the 1/2 ton?

The 1/2 ton hangers are also riveted on. You'll need a air chisel or torch to cut the head off of the BIG rivets and then bolt the new hangers in! Good luck man! get some pics up when you finish it!

And when jacking up the truck for the install do you jack the truck or the diff, and if it is the truck where is the best place to put the jack.
