Which is the best Air intake for 01 5.3L Suburban

Recommended Posts

I have the K&N Gen II FIPK on my Silverado, and am very happy with it. I got it on sale for $186 at Auto Zone, it was an easy install (less than an hour and a half)

I've been very pleased with the perfomance. Quite a bit more "jump" when you first hit the gas, and it pulls strong without "choking" like the stock intake did. It also seems that I'm getting better gas mileage, though I haven't checked the numbers yet.

A lot of people seem to like the Volant's, but I stuck with K&N, because I'd used their stuff before.

How is the heat shield. I haven't really seen how detailed the FIPK is set, but does it slightly draw hot aire from the engine bay?

The shield wraps around behind the filter, with a hole in it for the tube and MAF sensor to pass through. there's no shield below the cone, so I'm sure that some hot air does get in, but still it's miles ahead of the stock filter. I'll try to get some pics up later tonight or tommorow.

I've had the Volant air intake with the ram-air tube for several months on my 4.8L Sierra. The Volant intake is very well made and is fairly easy to install. I'm pleased with the performance of the intake, but they are kinda pricey.

just an fyi, if you want to improve gas mileage, u dont want a shroud because the higher temps which enter the intake, u get better gas mileage, why else would they put heaters in the intakes of diesels? it's a thermodynamics thing. however, more power u do want the shroud because of air density, but if you're running a some sort of compressor/charger, i suggest to go w/ an open version just cause u'll end up getting the best of both worlds, also higher intake temps would explain better gas mileage in the summer, just my 2 cents

Where did you get your information  Most of us aren't running SC or Turbo Charged engines and open element CAI's are much louder than closed element systems and are subject I would think to quicker heat soak.

My Volant came in, and I couldnt be happier. It would have been nice if it had come with instrucitons, there was one thing that was confusing, but everything else was A+ on it. It did make the truck a little more snappy, and smoothed out the power a bit. I would recomend it, and I like the scoop. It did also lower my AIT according to my Aeroforce gauges. I payed 250 for the CAI and 75 for the Scoop.
