Air intake vs. Sensor system

Does putting a cone filter and heatshield on the stock intake tubing mess up the mass airflow sensor?

Would you guys say a drop in K&N filter into the stock air box unit is better or worse than a generic cone filter on the stock piping?

I don't have the $200.00+ for a super intake. . .just exploring what other options there are.

It's not the media itself, it's the general tendancy to over oil and the oil blows off the media onto the sensor wire and coats the screen.

got it built, had to rush the end due to severe weather. BIG DIFFERENCE!!! and sounds goooood! mpg is up about 2-3 and intake air temp is down 10+ degrees.

all at a cost of about 60 bucks

I did that exact thing on my Grand Prix. I want to make one for my brother's Sierra. Do you have any pictures or description how you did yours? He's got the 4.8, so I think I need to use the stock pipe from the manifold to squeeze past the fan. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

i left my dig. cam at mother in laws but it was simple.

depending on the model and air box location.

I BENT SOME 3/32 ALUMINUM TO SHEILD THE HEAT AND CHANNEL AIR.

USE K&N FILTER RE-0870

USE 4" THINWALL PVC PIPE TO GO BETWEEN THE MAF SENSOR AND THE FILTER

JUST BEND THE METAL ABOUT THE SAME DEMISIONS AS THE AIR BOX MOUNTING PLATE BUT DONTMAKE THE SIDE BEHIND THE HEADLIGHTS AS LONG AS THE REAR( WHICH SHOULD EXTEND TO THE FENDER). SOME FOAM GASKET TO SEAL THE BOTTOM AND SIDES AND BAM! YOUR DONE. NOTE I DID NOT EXTEND MINE TO THE HOOD BECAUSE OF TIME ISSUES. BUT YOU CAN.

ONE MORE THING THE AIR IS ONLY COLD WHEN THE TRUCK IS MOVING AND IT GETS MOVING A LOT QUICKER.

Well, on a 97 Z28 I had, I put the following intake bolt on items:

- Moroso Cold Air Intake kit

- 1LE Elbow

- Billet MAF Housings

The Moroso put the cone filter up in front of the engine and radiator.

1LE elbow, eliminated the sound dampener, which causes turbulence. If you notice that big tube that goes to nothing, it keeps the open throttle noise down.

Billet MAF housings, opens the MAF up and eliminates the air blocking screen.

This combination gained a lot of HP. There was no problem with the MAF at all and I did not have to re-program the system.

Now I have seen on this forum where people have cut the screen out of their MAF an had problems. They don't make any MAF housing bolts on's, due to the way the truck MAF is made, there is a Granatelli one for big $$$$.
