Exhaust options for 1999 Denali

Recommended Posts

I am wanting to squeeze some more performance, and gas mileage out of my '99 Denali. I plan on going with a air intake, probably a cheap E-bay one and depending on the filter quality buy a big K&N cone to put on. I was also looking at exhaust but just can't seem to find one that sounds like it will fit. I looked under the truck and it has 2 pipes that come off of 2 cats to a flange, then from the flange it has 2 pipes going into the muffler and one pipe exiting the muffler to the side rear exit. Who makes a decently priced system that would work on my truck? I looked at some like Bassani and $800 for a exhaust system is a definete no! Anybody got any ideas? Would I be better off getting one custom made? And if so what would be a good muffler choice? I want something with some noise but not too much inside the cabin but a little is ok, its my wife worried about noise anyway.

Well, you CAN go w/ a cat-back system ordered offline, and TByrne is a great site to deal w/, but a custom shop can most likely make you a system cheaper, dual out or single out. As for a low-interior level muffler that still sounds great, would be a 70 series or a Spin Tech Truck/RV muffler. I have the 70 series 3" single on my 00 7.4 ltr, and around town I get zero drone and very low interior noise at all. Freeway's like stock. Towing the trailer it's more noticeable, but it's still ok. Spin Tech's muffler would most likely have a slughtly lower interior factor, even though the 70 series is basically like stock inside. It's be a bit louder outside and a bit deeper too. Magnaflow's a great choice too, I just prefer the chambered sound on 5.7's

Magna flows are straight through and can drone in car big time. I myself have always used a big single with a flowmaster and I have never wished for duals. If you go with try duals on a small block, you may seem a loss of low speed torque and mileage as well around town. Bigger is not always better and 2 is not always better than 1.

I still don't undertstand where people get the idea Magnaflows drone horribly, I've got their 14" on my 96 Ram and there's no sound inside at all at cruising speeds, literally. It's just like stock. Even when you're on the gas all you hear inside is a low, "no droning" rumble. My cousin has the 14" on his 00 5.3, and there's a tad bit of drone, but it's only between 35-45 mph and its only really noticeable in the back seat.

Like I said, I'd reccomend them, but I like the chambered sound on the 5.7's

I have seen some of them really drone when everything is just right. It has to do a lot with pipe length and muffler location too.

my magnaflow seems like it sounds better than when I had it installed a year ago. I chose the dual in/out and with that muffler the design kind of doubles like an "x-pipe" since you can look through to the other side in each hole (but not straight through more like at a slight angle). The muffler shop I went to suggested that bigger is quieter and I wanted a mellow tone and not aggressive sound since I kind of wanted to keep it "luxury". This suited my needs pretty good.
