Where are Silverados maunfactured...

Recommended Posts

I'd like to know where Silverado trucks are made. I understand that in Canada they are made in Oshawa, Ont. Where in the U.S. are they made?

Is there any reason why Canada's Department of National Defense should be buying heavy duty diesel extended cab Silverados from the U.S.?

Westgate Chevrolet -- an Edmonton, Alberta dealer -- currently has 28 Silverado diesel, olive green extended cab trucks with canopies sitting on its lot in Edmonton. I understand they cost about $60,000 (Canadian) each. Writing on the windows indicate they came from Flint, Mich. Would they have been made there? Can they not be made in Oshawa? Look around this board and the GM site. I think I heard that any GM full-size with the Duramax under the hood is built in the Flint plant. The rest are distributed between that one (Duramax trucks won't put a plant at capacity) and at least one other plant (Oshawa).

OK, I did the looking.

Looks like the Tahoe and its siblings are built in Arlington and Janesville #1. I think Mexico is also a location for these but it's not listed.

The Silverado and Sierra are built in Flint, Ft. Wayne, Pontiac East and Oshawa Truck at the least. Again, Mexico may also be a factor but it's not listed.

Oh yeah, if it says it came from Flint, it was built there. There should be an assembly plant listed on the sticker but the VIN will also tell you that info if you can find the decoder.

Here is how to decode your VIN.

What do the seventeen digits of a vehicle’s VIN represent?

#1 Country Manufactured - The first character vehicle identification number (VIN) serial number identifies the country from which the vehicle was manufactured: U.S.A.(1 or 4), Canada (2), Mexico (3).

#2 Manufacturer - Second vehicle identification number digit specifies the manufacturer: General Motors (G).

#3 Vehicle Type - Third vehicle identification number digit indicates the vehicle type or manufacturing division: (GMC).

#4 - 8 Vehicle Features - Fourth through eighth vehicle identification number digit reveals the vehicle features such as body style, engine type, model, series, etc.

#9 Accuracy Check Digit - The ninth vehicle identification number digit is a VIN accuracy check digit, verifying the previous VIN numbers.

#10 Model Year - Tenth vehicle identification number digit tells the model year: 2001(1), 2002 (2), 2003 (3).

#11 Production Plant - Eleventh vehicle identification number digit reveals the assembly plant for the vehicle.

#12 - #17 Sequential Number – The twelfth to seventeenth vehicle identification number digits indicate the sequence of the vehicle for production as it rolled of the manufacturer’s assembly line.

Decode a sample VIN: (2001 GMC C3) #2GTEK69U611000000

2 = Canadian Built

G = General Motors

T = GMC Truck

E = 6001 – 7000 GVWR and Hydraulic Brakes

K = 4x4

6 = Full Size Truck 1500 Luxury*

9 = Extended Cab

U = 6.0 liter V-8 engine (LQ4)*

6 = Check Digit

1 = 2001 model year

1= Oshawa, ONT Assembly Plant

000000 = Line Sequence

I don't know what the rest of the plant codes are, maybe someone else has those!

the oshaws plant only builds ext cabs, I think they are short boxes

I do not remember seeing 8 ft boxes in the Oshawa .

I have had a 00 Chevy, 03 GMC both from Fort Wayne

And I live 1/2 hr from Oshawa

"I won't even talk about the other two countries where they're built..... " pretty hard to talk about great countries

2500HDs and 3500s are built in Flint and Pontiac. Crew cabs in Flint, Extended Cabs in Pontiac. I think the regular cabs also come from Pontiac, but I'm not sure about that.

The lighter duty trucks come from all over the place. My '96 is from St. Louis.

We only build 1500 short box extended cabs & the new 1500 crew cab in Oshawa.

Oh & guys, thanks for the comments about trucks not built in the US. I've worked for GM of Canada for 23 & a half years, 11 of those in the Truck Plant. Only 1 of the 5 GM trucks I've owned was built here. So I guess you could say I'm helping your economy.

Also, where are the axles, trannies, rads, T/Cs, steering gear, drive shafts, 6 L engines & sheet metal for these Oshawa built trucks coming from? The US.

GMs only mexican plant that imports trucks into the USA for sale is

the Avalanche (they used to assemble the 'ho and burbs too)

plant in GTO mexico.

NOTE: The Aztek and Buick clone are made there also. :crackup:

Thats prob. why I didn't buy another 'Ho or a Avalanche 2500 that

I REALLY wanted badly !

Why wasn"t the price cheaper ?..............Hmmmmmm...........

Had to buy another few USA assembled ones instead !!!!!!!!!!!! :lol:

Actually that's where I snowmobile & do most of my offroading. I live in Oshawa, only a 15 minute drive.

We start building the '05s later this week. Contrary to other posts the only visible changes on the 1500s are the sliding rear window option, rear drum brakes & a re-designed chin spoiler. The grilles are the same.
