TC or Front Diff

Recommended Posts

Hi I am newbie to this forum but I am on the quest to resolve an issue.

I am hearing this whirring whining noise coming either from TC or Front Diff. This noise peacks at about 65-75 mph.

The rig has been in 3 different shops.

1. Dealer said that there are no codes & no problems.

2. Cottman Transmission said can not hear anything, but changed out the trany fluid it was a little dirty.TC fluid changed out no metal shavings fluid is fine.

3. Powertrain shop mechanic said that the noise is there but barely can hear it wihtout any load. The design of the car will not allow to take out the front dirve shaft and isolate the problem, because of the slip yoke. They have checked out the carrier bearings, u-joints, drive shaft & other components. Everything checked out fine.

The shop #3 told me that we could try to take things appart, but we do not know what to look for. That is very comforting, but I need a solution to this issue.

I own a 2000 Chevy Burb with auto 4wd & 88K on it as of today. When I am in the band of 65-75 mph I hear whining noise coming from undeneath the drivers side. It happend about 3 weeks ago I was driving on I-95 and heard a high pitch noise coming from that area and all of sudden I started hearing that rough noise and along with some noticable drag on the transmission like it is in 4wd. I spend most of time on the highway and it really annoys the heck out of me. I already looked through everything at this moment and short of replacing major components. Does the front drive shaft turns all the time even in 2hi? I looked through all of the TSBs from Alldata for my vehicle. Are there any other TSBs about the transfer case at this moment? Does anybody know if there are any issues with clutch packs or bearings in the case? TC goes from 2hi to 4hi to 4lo to auto4 & neutral without any problems. If somebody knows a reliable 4wd shop sround Franklin, MA or had any experience like that please share, because I am at a point where it is either to replace the TC with a rebuild unit or buy a new case.

Your 2 cents would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

youmention changing the t.c and tranny fluid - have you ever changed the fluid in the front diff? mine starting making a whining noise, and after i changed the fluid it went away. front diff fluid looked BAD when i took it out, and from what i have read here, others have had some pretty nasty looking stuff come from the diff fluid when they changed it.

This is actually on the list of things to do for this weekend front & back at the same time along with the front shocks replacement, belt replacement, oil change and complete inspection & troubleshooting on the jack stands. It thought about it too. Thank you for mentioning that.

  • 1 month later...

My 01 Rado made a who-who noise at about 60mph.....turns out the oil pump let go in the tcase and the whold tcase needed to be replaced. Now i get a slight vibration in rev and when first starting off.....who know why...I hope the busted tcase didnt screw anythin else up.
