Where to buy trailer wiring?

Recommended Posts

I got my hidden hitch from Etrailer.com EXCELLENT service. They had a local warehouse so it was at my door in less than 2 days. I got it installed in 15 minutes and got my backup lights in tonight as well...looks great.

I am hunting the factory looking 7 wire receptical that comes on trucks with factory hitches that's mounted to the left. I want to be able to get one and install it to look "factory" If not, I at least have to find a 7 wire to 4 wire plug. I prefer one that's long so I can hide the 7->4 wire under the truck.

Any ideas---I've checked autozone, discount auto, walmart, kmart and pep boys...

Can you not get the 7 pin receptical from Etrailer.com ???

Once you have the 7 pin receptical wired all you will need is a 7 pin to 4 pin adapter to plug your 4 pin trailer connector into.

I would think that most trailer/camper sales places should be able to rig you up with the parts you need if the auto supply places cannot. Anyone that sells hitches ought to have wiring supplies as well.

You can try Draw-Tite http://www.draw-tite.com/. They should have everthing you need.

I just bought a full trailer wiring kit (lights and all) from Acadamy (sporting goods store).

They had everything you would need...I would assume Bass Pro would have them too. Walmart would be a good bet as well.

My truck didnt come with the hitch/towing package. There was a 7 wire lead above the spare tire. I got the 7 wire receptical with the door on it...It pluged in, now Im' hunting the 7 to 4 wire deal.

I may just pick it up at the dealer, and try to hunt down a 3ft 4wire lead of some sort.

I will check the local uhaul though! Thanks for the idea!

Yes U-Haul should have or be able to get a 7 to 4 pin adapter.

I still do not understand why you will need a 3 ft 4 wire lead. :banghead: Does your trailer connector not have enough length to reach your truck connector? If it does it will plug into the 7 to 4 pin adapter which is plugged into the truck connector. The 7 to 4 pin adapter can be safely stored in your truck when not in use.

They hava 4-wire lead that is just about 3 feet long at Wal-Mart.

It has both the male and female ends on it, and I think it is mostly designed so that you can cut it in half and use one end on a trailer and the other on your truck, but will work great for you application.

I think it is made by Hoppy, but don'e quote me on that.

Hope this helps.

Well believe it or not---

I used some stuff off an F150 for my GMC! I had the 7 wire receptical, I bought the 7 to 4 wire adapter from the dealer I used to work for so that was good.

I still had no way to get a mount on the bumper for the 7-wire receptical that looked good.

The f150 had a 7 wire receptical and a mount. SO I took the mount and receptical off of the F150, it fit and the wires matched. Same plug, etc. EXCEPT that the receptical door said FORD on it...so I swapped the receptical doors since the GMC one would not fit on the ford mount. Once this was done, I cut the mount to fit correctly on the bumper, grinded it down, primed, spray painted and clear coated the mount and used self-tapping screws to mount it.

It actually turned out much much better than I expected. I'll get some pics up one day of it.
