Gas Mileage

Recommended Posts

Filled up tonight, got 9.8mpg, my average for the last 4 fill up's is 9.9mpg.

Not too bag for a big truck with a 6.0 & 4.11's and 285's.

it only has 1600 miles, but hey if I wanted gas mileage I'd drive the car ;)

I'm with you on that! I average between 11/12 on my 03 F250 6.8L and a little over 14 highway if I take it pretty easy on the throttle and keep the rpm around 1900 as much as I can.

If I run it even a little bit harder it drops to 10mpg mixed and 12 highway real easily! :troll:

I'm not complaining about it either way, but the extra 2mpg is an extra 50+ miles per tank which equals almost $10 per fillup!

Don't know if this happens with GM's HD engines, but I can also notice a mileage decrease when my oil starts to get dirty. If I let it go much over 3500 miles between changes it will drop about 1/2 mpg for mixed driving conditions.

You should see a little more mpg once the motor gets some more miles on it. I average around 13.5 mpg between highway and city driving with my 6.0L. The 6.0L get better gas mileage when you cruise at or below 2000 rpms. Which for translates to around 65mph or less with 265's. Should be more with the 285's you are running. Either way these trucks are not about gas milege, like you said...

I do not think it is the RPMs as much as the increased drag a your speed increase beyond 2000 RPM. Drag starts climbing quickly above 60 or so.
