Just bought a new duramax

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I got rid of my 2004 Z-71 for a 2004 GMC 2500 Duramax w/ Allison tranny. So far, I have had the windows tinted, put on 285 BFG's and cranked the torsion bars. I also got the dealership to throw in a hypertech chip and its on the 90hp setting. This is extended cab by the way. What I am wanting to know is if I put on the Banks monster 4" exhaust and the K&N FIPK kit would this cause the Allison to start slipping? I am presuming this would lower EGT's quite a bit and give some good HP gains. I just need some suggestions, I am new to the diesel world, but I am loving it so far! :seeya:

Is your Duramax the LLY Version? If so, there is not a Hypertech available for it yet.

I just bought mine in April, and I love it. I traded my 2002 Sierra 2500HD CC/LB with the 8.1. It was killing me on gas!

My first diesel too, and I am really loving it!! Good Luck with your new truck.

What was your reason for going Diesel? Gas cost? Did you take a big hit on your Z71? You had that truck looking nice. Did you trade it in or sell it outright? Man that truck was sweet. Did you get the same color?

I ended up getting 32,500 for that truck on trade in. I didnt think that was THAT bad. I ended up getting white. I love that color on this truck. Looks really sharp. I will post pics tomorrow. I am hoping to have the money this week for 4" exhaust and a K&N intake. :seeya:

BTW, this engine is not the LLY engine. :seeya:

Was it an old unit? The only D-Maxes on the lots here are LLY's. GM hasn't built an LB7 since December.

BTW, mine is white too, with painted flares...really looks clean...I have already put 285 BFG's on it and the white Z71 Suburban Door Handles and buckets, 20% tint looks good on front windows too...just a few ideas

Good Luck

Congrats on the truck. Your Allison can take up to about 135 additional HP before it could go into limp mode under hard acceleration. Your 90 HP mod and a Banks Exhaust will be fine. Your EGT's will be lowered by about 150* with the Banks, but don't expect any big HP increases, though.

I hope your considering installing a pyrometer while running around with 90 additional HP.

I have run the K&N filter on many gas engines, but have heard from many diesel guys that the K&N gives really high dirt in oil when they did oil samples. So I am running the AFE stage II cold air intake. and it is very nice. The turbo really whisles with this setup. I also have the banks exhause, and other then it rusting pretty bad in less then 2 years, I like it and it sounds good.

Like Machine stated, you need gages for exhaust and boost. Exhaust gage is a must in my opinion.

You need to check out some of the diesel forums like dieselplace.com there are others, but I think that one has the most traffic and many good people there as well.

Hey guys,

I didnt know it could take up to 135 HP. What else could I do for a little more HP? After the K&N and banks exhaust I am getting Banks gauges for the interior. EGT and boost. Should I get rid of the hypertech and go with the Juice? Will I see that much difference? It wont throw it in limp mode will it? Also, what about the Banks wastegate actuator, has anybody tried that?? :seeya:

Thanks,

Chad

Hate to be the one that informs you about the power limping. But I have the Quad Stealth 135, and it will limp the transmission in 5th gear every time I run it to the max. Meaning, it is fine most of the time. You can save the tranny somewhat by using the overdrive lockout. The tranny will still get punished if you run it hard very much. I know the Hypertech is cheap compared to the Juice/Attitude but it can not touch it. The Hypertech is for the guy that is looking to get a little more power, and want to increase the top speed at a very reasonable price.

The Juice is for those that want to beat sports cars on the street. and have the money to get the best, or at least one of the best.

If you do get the Edge Juice, get the Attitude for it. then you don't need to buy the Banks gages.

As for the waste gate, You have to be careful when you start adjusting or messing with the turbo and its waste gate. With that said, I am thinking about getting it myself. Even though I would much rather buy from other companies, Their waste gate setup seems to be head and shoulders over all others I have seen.

Hey,

So, if I get the "Juice" w/ the monitor + exhaust + intake its gonna limp the tranny? Can you define limp exactly. I dont understand what the tranny does. Also, does it just go into it when you go from a dead stop and it shifts thru every gear till you reach 5th? I didnt know the "Juice" was that much better. :seeya:
