Torsion Bars!

Recommended Posts

Well, I just got my lemon truck back from the dealer after about the 8th time it's been there, and they replaced my master cylinder and driver's side control arm. I cranked my torsion bars 4 turns to gain 1 additional inch long before it ever went to the dealer.

I didn't ever have the truck aligned because everyone told me that only 1 inch wouldn't change things enough to need an alignment. However, I figured that since an alignment was necessary when replacing the control arm, I would get a good deal by having it aligned perfectly for the cranked setup.

Wrong!

They changed my torsion bars back to the stock setting and then did the alignment.

Why would they change this when the torsion bars were meant to be adjusted, and I hadn't made any radical changes?!

For what it is worth, part of the alignment for your truck may have INCLUDED an adjustment on the torsion bars.

I've had an alignment place do that also. I think they know that loosening the t-bars will bring things back into spec without messing with other stuff. It saves them time which also saves or makes them money in the long run.

Did you tell them that you adjusted the torsion bars and would like them left at their current settings? If the front end of your truck was out of specification they probably assumed ( wrongly it seems) that they sound return it to spec. Maybe they should have asked you but my guess is that it was just easier to adjust the torsion bars back to stock which would also adjust the rest of the front back to spec. Maybe they did not like the fact you adjusted them.

You should have discussed this with them before they did the work. Then you would have avoided this problem or found out if they had any concerns about the fact you adjusted your torsion bars. It is all about communication.

Sorry to hear about the SNAFU with your truck. :seeya:

Better luck next time. :flag:
