Trans Filter & Fluid Change on 4L80E

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am looking for some info on the 4L80E as far as doing the filter and fluid change. First off does this trans have a filter or screen and does it have to be replaced, if so how often? I want to do the work myself and want to know if I have to drop the pan and change out the filter/screen or just drain the fluid from the pan and replace it. I had the dealer flush the trans at 30,000mi and I now have 63,000mi on the truck. The dealer did no filter change that I am aware of at that time. I am not going to do a full flush at this time. Any info would be great...

Thanks...

Well just called a local Chevy dealer here in town and spoke with the service department and the parts department. The service department said the the trans flush includes dropping the pan and putting a new filter in. Then I talked to the guy in the parts department and asked for a price on the filter kit and the new gasket for the pan. He was telling me that the pan has a reusable gasket on it, but if for some reason it is unusable that the gasket kit is $42.00. I had to pick my jaw up off the ground after hearing that, not to mention the price for the filter kit is $55.00. :D The quoted me $119.50 to do the trans service. So the fluid must only cost $20.00 then, anyway can you say dealer mark up? I just talked with the guy from the parts department again and he said those gaskets never really need to be replace unless the trans pan is damaged for some reason. Just make sure to torque the pan to the factory specs. Going to see if I can get a filter kit for cheaper though. So this is what I am going by, the trans has a filter....

I can tell you that my 4L60E has a filter, and I think its actually similar to the one for your 4L80E. I just changed mine a couple of weeks ago and it was pretty simple. My trans filter kit included a filter, new filter neck seal, and a trans pan gasket. I bought my kit from www.gmpartsdirect.com for $32, your's should be the same price.

Couple of words of wisdom. After you take off the old filter, you've got to take out the old filter neck seal. This thing was a bit_h to get out. I recommend getting a hook-ended screwdriver of some sort to make it easier. Before you can get the pan off you'll have to get the shift linkage bracket out of the way. I took a large C clamp and pulled the bracket clear of the pan, pulling the bracket up against the front driveshaft.

Yep same here. The kit had the filter, gasket, and neck seal. I didnt know it came with a gasket (i dont trust the its reusable ploy) so I bougt one and it was only like $5. Total cost was like $35 for all of it.

I have 01 HD with the 4l80E. I use a Napa filter when I changed mine and it looked just like the GM part. The pan will drop straight down although a little tight. You do not have to undo the linkage. Some of the bolts are a little tough to get to, but not to bad. I also reused the gasket with no leaks. I hope this helps
