Steering gear box

Recommended Posts

I have this noise coming from the right front wheel area. It's a cyclical sound, that increases with speed, and it's most noticable when I apply the breaks, or reverse and cut the wheels.

I thought it was a bad CV, or hub, but I've taken it to the stealer 3 times. the first time they couldn't reproduce it, the second time, they said it was the steering gear box. I didn't have them fix it, and sought a second opinion. The 2nd opinion (another chevy dealership), thought forsure it was a bad CV or hub. They sent me back to the first dealership, because I have already replaced the CV once, and it's under warrenty. So today they call me, and say that it's the steering gear box....again.

I thought I knew how they worked, but I guess I don't. Can someone explain to me how I can get a noise that increases with speed, and has a definate pattern to it, to come out of the steering gear box. I'm no genuis when it comes to trucks, but I still don't believe this noise is steering related. They want to replace it, and I don't want to get rid of cash that I don't have to.

thanks

BTW...the noise isn't the ususal whine that comes from PS pump, it's a click, infact with the tuck parked and off, if you push the front left bumper and bounce the truck you can hear the click.

Well the verdict is in.....after two days at the dealership, it's not the CV, it's not the Steering box....it's not the hub....it's my d**n center cap on my wheel.....when I brake, apparently it flexes, and makes noise.....they checked everything under there.....everything is good to go, and torqued to specs....the exact words were....."tighter than a roosters a**" is what I believe he said.

Oh and they checked out the steering box, and said is was working perfectly, and they couldn't here any noise from it....I know one south florida dealship, that's never getting my business again....if you live down here....you can PM me and I'll tell you where not to go.

TMF :D
