Mileage on your BFG's and which one is best?

Hi, I'm sure that this has been asked before but the site hasn't been allowing me to do searches for some reason so I apoligize for that. Any who, I'm getting ready to get ride of the stock tires and get a set of tires that can preform well the mud, dirt, rocks, snow or anything. I've been eyeballing the BFG all terrian and mud terrian tires for some time now and I cant' seem to decide between the two. Which tire will perform the best in off-road, street and wet conditions?

 

For those of you who have either one of these tires, how many miles should I expect from them with correct alighnment and proper tire maintenence? What load index should I choose, I tow a small trailer with dirt bikes on it in the summer but thats about it.

 

One last thing, no matter what tires I get I still can't decide if I want to keep the stock 265/75R/16's or go to the 285/75R/16's. I deffinetly like the look that the 285's give yaa but I'm don't wanna loose anymore gas mileage or performance. So besides astetics, will the 285's really give me a big enough advantage when I go play off-road that justifies the extra $$$, possible power loss due to the tire size and the speedometer being off? I'd really appreciate any help. Thanks!!!

The best all-around tire out of those two is the All-terrains. You can expect at least 60-70k miles out of the all-terrains with proper maint. I had a set on my 88 F-150 and got 80k miles out of them. Of course I had the alignment checked/corrected every year and rotated the tires every 3k miles when i changed the oil. Its a lot of work, but for the amount of money they cost, its worth it.

 

The Mud-terrains will wear alot faster and are worse in the rain.

Thanks for the advice, I was kinda leaning for towards the all-terrians from the start but the mud-terrians gotta look and perform awesome. I would have thought they would be a harder compund for some reason, but I could see them not being too good in the rain. I'll prob just stick with the 265's for now cause I'm not gonna lift it for a while so they should be okay.

 

Has anyone had any experiance with the mickey thompson dick cepek radial F-C II's? I just came across these tires and they look like a real good all-terrian tire too. Any info on these? The site doesn't say anything on wear and stuff like that. Mickey Thompson's Dick Cepek Tires

I had 2 sets of the ATs on my fullsize 85 Blazer,and both sets went over 60K. I had them on my 01 2500HD and they didn't make it to 22K,I was very dissapointed. Maybe the HD is too heavy for the ATs? Even being "D" load range tires didn't help.

 

It depends on how much you'll wheel your truck. If its only occasionally I'd get the ATs. If its an every weekend kinda thing get the MTs,they'll blow the ATs away in almost every condition. The MTs won't have the same wet traction,but if you get them siped they will work much better in the rain.

 

I'm going back to an 04 1500 4x4. When I do I'll have the BFGs on her before I leave the dealer.

I have the 285 BFG ATs right now. I have almost 40K miles on them. I am leaning towards the 255/85 BFG MTs next. Main reason is they are about $30 a tire cheaper and I am hoping that with the tread pattern rocks wont get stuck as much and fling around at highway speeds

I've got about 25-30k on my BFG ATs right now but they seem to be wearing quicker than I thought they would. But besides that, they have been good tires and would definitely choose them again. And I haven't had any problems with my speedo, mostly because I have checked and rechecked it with those portable radar guns that cops leave around Phoenix. I also haven't had any gas milage problems. Last time I drove from Flagstaff to Albequerquie I got 20 mpg. I thought that was darn good, especially for my truck. The only thing I don't like abouth them is that everyone and their dog has them here, so my next tire is going to be a Mickey Thompson or goodyear mud terrain. But all and all, I think they are well worth your money.

I have Pep Boy's Futura Dakota RVT tires on my S-10, 31x11.5 size. I had the BFG ATs on my old truck, a Jimmy, in 235/75/15 size. Not sure if it's the larger contact patch or the tire itself but the tires on the S-10 seem more stable in a wider variety of conditions. Truck felt like it was on rails in 4"+ of snow, with no extra weight in the bed. The Jimmy would have been all over the place even with the BFGs. Rain traction is better, I can gun the engine and not spin the tires now, with the BFGs I had a hard time not spinning them in the rain, even with light throttle.

 

I've been offroad with them also, not just fire roads. I went to Paragon and went EVERYWHERE a similar truck equipped with BFGs went, if I wanted to go there, there were places he went that I chose not to because I NEED this truck and can't afford costly repairs should I mess anything up.

 

Just another less-costly but very capable tire that's out there.

I think I'm gonna buy the factory 17" GMC wheels and I want to get the BFG Mud Terrian tires (265/70R/17") but they don't make the mud terrian in that size. I really had my heart set on those tires, are there any other good mud terrian tires that are equal or better than the BFG's? Thanks

Have you thought about the yokohama Geolander AT+II. I had a set that were a great all around tire. I have the ability to choose from many different tires where i work and these seem to be the favorite of my self and co-workers. just my $.02

Best I ever got out of a set of 31 x 10.50 BFG load range "C" all terrains was about 40,000. I went through 3 sets of 4ea. First two setups had belt failures and went out of round and third set started cracking badly in tread with tiny pieces of belt coming out. They were alway properly inflated and were used on a 1/2 ton 89 GMC 4x4 suburban. I switch to Michelin since last failure and have had no further problems. THose BFG's did not like my truck or the highway miles they got. They wore fine and handled well and were good on ice until failure and were rotated regularly.

Had a set of 285/75/16's BFG TA KO's, got about 50,000 out of them. Still about another 20,000 I figure on the rear set (or from as far as I can tell the set that just came off the rear). The fronts didn't hold as well and had them rebalanced and rotated and aligned frequently. Figure I have about another 10,000 left on them. Mostly highway mileage at speeds of 65+. I guess not bad for a 60,000 average. I really liked those tires and they held the road and off-raod very well in a fair amount of conditions. The good thing about them was that they have a 6 ply sidewall rating, which I 'm not sure if any other tires do. The sidewalls are really rugged. I did manage to gash one about an inch to inch in a half and about a 1/8" in depth and it is still holding after 20,000 miles with no problem. Took it back to the dealer to have them check it and they said it was ok. Probably cut it on a sharp rock.

 

Liked them so much I now went with a set of 315/75/16, 60 miles on them so far. I'll probably try to take better care of these and rotate them more often than the others. :lol:

You do have to figure that BFG puts a tread wear warranty of 50,000 miles on most of their tires, including the A/T's (M/T's are excluded). So if you get 50k out of them, that is normal. Anything above and beyond is a bonus.
