How much do you pull ?

Recommended Posts

I've got a 96 1 ton dually, 454 ,auto, running 4:10 gears. Right now I'm pulling a 5er with UVW of 6000 lbs, I add about 1000 lbs for us and gear, not much of a effort for the truck. We are looking at new unit with UVW of 9300-10500 lbs. How much are you pulling and what kind of performance do you get when pulling a good grade. We are off HWY 152 in Ca. I can take that grade 60mph+ no problem.

Anyone else drive that.

Thanks,

If you want a unit that heavy, you have a good truck!!! The dual rears are what you really need, and the BBC plus the 4.10's are a good option.

You will notice some performance decrease due to the added weight and most likely the wind resistance.

Keep all your driveline components nice and cool, and don't get in a hurry, and you'll be happy!!! :smash:

I pull this... it's got a GVW of 9000 lbs, and I guess it weighs between 8000-8500 lbs. I have the 6.0L with 4.10's in my truck. It's not a rocket ship by any means, but it gets the job done.

Shotgun-your truck looks good as usual. Noticed you got clearance lights on in the trailer photo. You do that yourself or what? They look good on there.

Yea I put them on myself and did a terrible job of it too. If I had to do it all over again I wouldn't install them at all. Here's another blurry pic.

I have a 2004 F-450 4x4 PSD auto 4.30 gears.I have 3 dump trailers that I use for my roofing company that range in size from 12-16 yards.Fully loaded they weigh 14,000-18,000 lbs.I currently have a Pace 28 ft enclosed car hauler that weighs around 8,000-8,500 lbs with car and tools. This trailer will be replaced in the next month with a 44ft 2-car gooseneck trailer. The Ford hauls the freight like no truck I have ever owned.I don't regret buying the Ford at all.

I tow a 8x16x9ft' high enclosed trailer everyday to the job. It has ladders, tools, generator, etc... The Ford has 12 ft. dump boxes and it weighs around 12000 empty. With loads it is up over 18K. The Dmax pulls faster and stronger than the Ford empty.

422 SS, what kind of roofing are you into? I am going more into siding with all the storm chasers. I am sick of fixing all of their work.

I pull anything from steel to heavy equipment... The heaviest thing I've pulled would have to be a 310 John Deere on a 25+5 CornPro Goose. 2002 HD 6.0 4.10 5spd 4x4. Quick math gooseneck empty is 6,000lbs. and the 310 weighs with 4x4 and cab and boom about 15,000lbs. so trailer weight of about 21,000lbs. Pulled it from the shop to a jobsite about 15 miles away and never saw speeds above 45-50. Not that I wanted to go faster than that...

I pull a 14,410 GVWR 5th wheel with a 2500HD DMax/Ally combo, 2WD, 3.73 gears. Weight of the trailer varies depending on length of the trip (how much crap we pack in it!), but typically is around 12,500#. The DuraMax handles this load very well, taking grades at speed, rarely dropping below 4th gear. We've pulled in all kinds of terrain, including long steep grades like Salt River Canyon in Arizona, accelerating at will even on 10% grades. This truck just loves to pull.

Our day to day bread and butter is new construction roofing for a couple very large local builders. We do 25-30 new homes a week on average.Add in 50-60 multi family buildings and maybe 100 residential tear-offs a year and I'm a very busy person.I manage all of this myself.I'm the owner, salesman, inspector, truck driver and baby sitter for 35 men.The rewards are great but the negatives, well I don't need to tell you,you already know.Having said that I couldn't imagine doing anything else.I eat stress and pressure for lunch.

Our camper weighs in around 10,000lbs loaded with our stuff, and the dmax pulls the mountain grades here with ease. Only one 7% grade made me slow down as my EGT's were hitting 1400 for far to long!!

I have also double trailered down to Pueblo for some weekend fun, truck, trailer and boat total was around 21,000lbs. Still got around 11mpg on that trip and had no problems getting up to or maintaining speed.
