Trying to buy filters

Recommended Posts

I decided to go buy filters for my truck yesterday. I buy them from Napa. I live 9 miles from Princeton and 9 miles from Cambridge. Both have Napa stores and Cambridge has a newer store. I normally always go to Princeton because I am already there, but decided to try the new store in Cambridge. I go there and they have one oil filter, no air filter, and no Rotella oil!! Besides that they wanted $24 for the air filter. I also saw the price for a fuel filter and it was $29. I told them how I felt about there inventory and their prices and left. I went to two other auto stores in town and they all wanted at least $23 for an air filter. The Napa store in Princeton only charges $15 for an air filter. How can this be? I would think they should be all the same. Napa online doesn't even have any parts listed for a Dmax. I thought these air filters were the same from the 5.3 and up? Why should such a universal filter be so expensive. I am almost ready to buy a foam filter for $50 and be done with it.

Turns out everyone raised their prices to about $25 for an air filter. I ended up paying $25 and got a Wix filter. Performance products has AFE filters on clearance for $35 and gmdieseltech has ACdelco filters for $20.

I use K&N drop in filters in both of my Silverado's and love them. I just bought one for my 2500HD and $65 is a lot of money for an air filter, but its the last one I'll ever buy. (I'm not crazy about the looks of these cone filter replacement systems they are pushing, it seems to me getting rid of the stock air box is just opening you up to engine heat and dirt)

Midnight - how often do you clean your K&N drop in filter? I have one in a UPD (NSV) (NSV) box and am wondering if I should use the $10 K&N cleaner kit or are they for the cone filters?

K&N recommends cleaning every 25-50K (more often in extremely dusty conditions). A little dirt actually helps catch more dirt. The cleaning kits work well, just read the instructions in the kit, and as has already been mentioned don't over-oil, just want nice even coverage
