remove trans pan bolt drain and refill?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone removed their trans pan drain bolt? Let it drain then refill? I figure this may be a good way instead of flushing to get most of the old fluid out. If lets say once a week remove the drain plug drain and then after 2 or 3 drainings remove the pan and replace the filter. I heard getting the bolt off is tough. ANyone do this?

Oh yeah I have done many of them.If you have not taken the bolt off since the factory put it on then you will need an air chisle. If you dont you will just stip the plug.An air shisle will break it lose real fast.I change my tranny fluid[pull the plug] every oil change. Then evry 15,000miles I pull the plug and let the fluid drain and then I will drop the pan and change the filter.

I tried getting my trans pan drain plug off for the first time and just stripped the sh.t out of it. Everyone I've talked to has had the same problem. They just won't come out. I'll be taking my pan to a shop to have it removed, then I'll go buy a new plug and do frequent drain/fill cycles in order to get a complete change.

The drain plug comes off easily with a 15mm 6 point socket and a 3/8" impact wrench. I use your frequent drain and fill idea myself, but I do it every month or two at my liesure. New fluid is always good and synthetic is better. Over an extended period you'll have the same results (close enough anyhow in my books) as a drain, flush and replace process (heckuva lot simpler too). JMHO.

24213991 is the part number for the drain plug. I highly suggest getting one before you even attempt it. As mentioned above, 15mm-6 point socket, impact or breaker bar to start. Keep the socket pushed on the plug when loosening. I had to finish mine off with a hammer and chisel. Next time it should be O.K. since you won't torque it as tight as the gorilla that assembled these transmissions. I had my transmission good and hot before I drained.

Should take you about 3 beers.:cool::cheers:

Good luck!
