Stock Tires on the '04 2500HD

Recommended Posts

I am picking up my new 2500HD, 6.0L sometimes this week from my local dealer. I am just curious about the OEM tires. My truck was located from a dealer some distance away and is being traded for in the next couple of days so I haven't actually seen it. Based on similar trucks on the dealers lot, it appears that Chevrolet is putting the Bridgestone Duravis 773 (the OOR BW option) on at the factory.

Can anyone comment on the performance of these tires. I've looked on tirerack.com and various other sites and have just not found much data. I've got a feeling like most other OEM tires on GM trucks I have bought they will not suit my needs.

How about some suggestions for replacement????? I do a mixed bag of driving. Right now I'm doing a limited amount of towing (but that will increase in the future), I drive a 100 mile round trip to work on the interstate each day, I live in a very rural area so my local driving often takes me over gravel roads, etc. I need a good traction tire to get back thru the fields on my property also. Need something that will be good in the snow also. I have experience on some of my other trucks with Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo's and BF Goodrich AT KO's.

Any other suggestions? I've never owned a 3/4 ton before (drove 1/2 ton Z71 and Avalanche), how much do I have to pay attention to the suggested load rating ( "E") & Speed Rating ("R") that's supposedly on the OEM tires? Is this only if I am towing the maximum loads or is this a requirement based on the inherent weight of this larger truck regardless of the additional load?

Thanks to all for reading, looking forward to your comments.

John

John, congrats on your new HD!

My 03 came with baby 245 Firestones.

They are junk!

Very unforgiving in the least amount of snow or other slippery surface.

100 miles round trip to work.................. I did a job last year that was 80 rt on secondary roads and milage was tough.

Next time I'll need to charge more due to milage concerns.

I have an aftermarket intake and dyno'd cat back exhaust. This gets me 14mpg if I drive very easy for the whole tank!

With a great sounding exhaust, I can drop it down to 11+ mpg

The Revo's have gotten a great review on here from peole that have bought them...

I wouldn't go any lower than a "D" load rating. Actually a "D" in a 265/75/16 has about the same weight capacity as an "E" in the stock 245/75/16's.

I'm running Michelin LTX M/S 265/75/16's "E" on my HD. The tires have 10K miles on them and are showing no real wear. The are great all around tires. Quiet on the dry, excellent wet traction, very good in the snow and ice, and more than adequate when I've forged off road.

Another tire to consider is the Nitto Terra Grappler as it is available in 265/75/16 "E" rating.

I just put a set of Nitto Tera Grappler 265/75/R16E on my 2500HD and they are working out great for me so far. I was able to get them for just under $600 installed with there standard warranty. Idid not opt for their full tire replacement plan and that saved me about & $70 or so. Here are a couple pics:

Me too.I have a set of these on my HD and the 3500 cargo van.A good smooth ride and they last forever.I wouldn't recommend them for mud though.I was on the receiving end of a yank strap when I tried to do some mud running in my yard to hook up one of my trailers.Michelins are pricey but I have found they're a good value considering they last twice as long as cheap tires.

I have 285/75/r16 BFG All Terrains on my HD and couldnt be happier. Is the truck 4 wd or 2 wd, and how much concern is ground clearence? I was able to get my dealer to crank up the torsion bars in the front and install my tires for a little over $680 and they just rolled it into the price of the truck. IMO the stock tires aren't worth the rubber they're made out of.

Thanks for the comments, I have the BFG KO's on my Avalanche, have performed very well so far. Not really interested in cranking the torsion bars, will the 265/75-16's fit with no rubbing or trimming the wheel wells????

We have installed loads of 265's at the dealership I work at and have never had a complaint of tire rub, and we do not crank torsion bars. We have installed BFG A/T's, M/Ts, and have installed a ton of Bridgestone Dueler A/T's. We have installed a few Nitto tires too with no complaints.

I am running Michelin LTX A/S LT265/75R16 E on my truck. Just got them last month, they ride nice and do very good on wet roads (because I start to pull an 8500lb RV I had to replace a perfect set of Michelin LTX A/T LT265/75R16 because the previous owner put LR C  tires on the truck).

Yes the 265's will fit without rubbing, our local dealerships sell trucks on the lot with them already on the truck. Watch out though, your speedo and odometer are going to be off slightly, I would guess 2 mph slow on the speedometer.

Is there any easy way to fix the Speedo problem? My dealer said that GM will not let them????? I didn't want to have to spend the 300+ on a programmer... When you guys went to 265 did it decrease your MPG? Did you change out the spare too?
