Still clankin' in the rear

Recommended Posts

It only happens in reverse after I've been driving for a while, or backing out of a parking space.

It's coming from the passenger rear and it's pretty loud. A sharp metal/metal pop/clank sound.

I tightened up the rear leaf springs with my bad ass impact gun that I use at the shop...tightened the shackles real tight....no difference.

I'm going to loosen the rear shackles back up because it rides like crap now ....

Any other ideas? :P

I drive a 2004 GMC 2500 LD 4x4 SB. Before buy the truck I test drove it and all was ok. Before receiving the truck a had the dealer install 3 tool boxes (cross box 2 side boxes.) The tool boxes added about 400+ Lbs and about 550+ lbs with loaded boxes. Anyway the rear end was noisy (clank on small bumps and shutter on left or right turns). IMO the problems are the leafsprings. With the extra weight on the truck bed the AUX leaf spring is to close to the main leaf spring set (about 3/8 to 1/2 in.) with any small bumps the AUX leaf will hit the main leafsprings set with a CLANK SOUND. The dealer install 4 boot in the front and back on the AUX leaf and that took care of the CLANK. Now for the shutter noise they Lub the main leafspring set and took care of the noise. It's my opion that lubricating of the leafsping is a temp repair. Now after driving during a good rain the SHUTTER is back and back to the dealer. I would like GM to replace the rear springs!

Hope this Helps

You dont need any weight in the rear to produce this sharp metal to metal clank sound. In my case whether in reverse or drive the torque of the drive shaft move the leaf spring (like a rocking chair effect) hitting the Aux leaf spring at one of the end producing a loud sharp clank. Does your truck AUX leaf have round insulator or boot at each end? In my truck the round insulator did not eliminate the clank sound. It was the boot that did the job in stopping the clank.

Hope this Helps

Mine does the same thing, it's the posi unit disengaging, mine does it hard after its been sitting overnight, when I back out of the driveway as soon as I start to turn the wheel, you can feel it tighten up before it releases, if you roll slowly. Try it and tell me what you find.
