6,000 mi service for 2500 HD?

Recommended Posts

i just got my reminder from the dealership about my 6,000 mi service for my 03 2500 HD (reg cab long bed) w/ 8.1, Allison, 4x4, and 4.10.

now, i know what my vette really needs service wise, but i don't know these trucks at all. so, do i really need to drain and replace the differential fluid at 6,000 mi?

thanks,

kw

At 6k, I'd do an oil/lube/filter, rotate the tires, check your other fluids. If you have a concern about metal fragments from manufacturing being in some of the driveline fluids, you could change them, but that's up to you. I'd take a look at the air filter and perhaps shake it out or blow it with compressed if you have it.

Why not refer to your trucks owners manual that lists the scheduled maintenance?

The rear axle service guidelines in my 2500HD manual states, "it is not necessary to regularly check rear axle fluid unless you suspect there is a leak or you hear an unusual noise." There is nothing else listed in the 'Scheduled Maintenance' or 'Additional Required Services' section of the manual for the rear axle either.

It comes with synthetic lubricant from the factory and I take the manual to mean, there is no regularly scheduled checking or fluid replacement needed unless you think something's up.

Beyond that it boils down to it being a 'peace of mind' thing for you.
