Tire width for an 8.5 wide rim?

What's the largest width tire that I can safely put on a 20 x 8.5 rim? 285? 295? I've heard that 305 will fit, but I think that'll cause rubbing problem in the front, especially since I'll be dropping my truck 2/4.

you more than likely don't want more than a 285

275/45 is going to work the best with the 2/4 drop
