I have a friend that pulled a truck home that was without an engine but transmission and rest of driveline intact. Rather that taking off the driveshaft he put the transfer case into neutral and the transmission in neutral and started towing it home. After a bump in the road he noticed that the vehicle in tow was pulling harder than first started, so he stopped. He got out and found that the transfer case must have slipped into gear as did the transmission. Even tho he maybe towed for no more than 5 miles like this without an engine attached to the transmission would if have caused any damage to the transmission? There was tranny fluid sprayed all over the engine compartment and the transmission was a little hot to the touch. Any suggestions or help appreciated.

Your friend could have some transmission damage. When the driveshaft is still connected to the transmission, your still forcing parts to turn in the tranny when you towing it... and when the engine isn't on, the transmission isn't circulating oil through the transmission to critical areas, nor removing the heat through the transmission cooler.

I would pull the transmission pan and filter and see if there are any metal particles in them. You also could have cooked the oil.
