Temp sensor question

Recommended Posts

If I remember correctly the top line is the "out" line and the lower line is the return line...But you can also put the temp sensor in the pressure test port, theres a pipe plug in it now (thats where i put mine) on a 4L60E its on the drivers side of the housing,on a 700R4 its on the pass side of the tranny.

I have it in the test port now, but is that very accurate?

Works fine for me,as far as I can tell, its been a pretty darn cold winter here though

My gauge hasnt read over 150F but once since I installed it,but my truck also has the towing package on it w/the extra cooler and all...I was planning to probe the fluid thru the dipstick tube when I get a chance, now that the weather seems to have broke,I just may do that this weekend...I'l let u know what I find

Don't see a problem. Today driving home from work and about 45 F degrees out, I looked down and notice the tranny temp just never really came up any. Drive is about 25minutes 60 miles per hour, and 20 minutes 70 miles per hour. This is factory setup since it is on a 2500 Avalanche. But in the summer doing the 6000lb tows it will start to warm up then, mostly because driving up and down some hilly country. Unless you drive with the pedal to the floor from stops then I doubt it would rise much in cold weather.

OK,so its a month later, and I finally got my fat a$$ under the truck...turns out that the fluid temp was actually about 45deg. warmer them my gauge is reading,I also found that AUTO METER makes a manifold for a temp sensor...check this out SENDING UNIT MANIFOLD

I'm actually gona install a remote tranny filter that has a port in it and move my sensor.....SORRY for the delay :D

Like they said above, 4L60E's have a test port on the drivers side of the housing above the shift linkage. A friend of mine has one on his 4L60E there, and it reads tranny temps great there.

I built a manifold for my 4L60E I had in my camaro like you mentioned above. I used a T-fitting and screwed the temp gauge in the top of the T. Just be sure to get a T-fitting large enough so as to not constrict the tranny fluid flow. Your tranny temp gauge will probably include a couple adapters for use in larger or smaller holes. I brought the adapters to a hardware store and built a T-fitting. It worked awesome. There is a temp sensor already in the tranny, and I was logging real-time data off the engine computer and my tranny temp gauge was within 1 degree of what the engine computer was seeing. If you put the temp sensor in the output line of the tranny, it'll be dead-nuts accurate.

If you have any more questions about how to hook everything up, post it up here. Also, I would consider adding another tranny cooler while you have the lines cut. Extra insurance and your tranny will run much cooler. Just put the aftermarket cooler after the tranny temp gauge so you know what the internal temp in the tranny is.

Good luck!
