SMELLY 6.0 LITER

Recommended Posts

HEY GUYS BOUGHT A 03 2500HD,6.0,AUTO.ETC.

EVER SINCE I HIT ABOUT 200 MILES THIS THING STINKS REAL BAD.

I NOW HAVE AROUND 4000 MILES AND IT SMELLS EVEN WORSE.THE SMELL IS

COMING FROM THE EXHAST AFTER THE ENGINE WARMS UP.KINDA SMELLS LIKE

SULFER.BEEN TO DEALERSHIP 3 TIMES,THEY HAVE SAID EVERYTHING CHECKS

OUT CORRECTLY AND ITS NOT A FAULT OF THE ENGINE OR SENSORS.TO TRY

TO SHUT ME UP THEY REPLACED BOTH CONVERTORS,THE SMELL RETUNED AFTER

A WEEK.( COULD HAVE BEEN MASKED BY THE SMELL OF NEW EXHAST ETC.)

NOW ITS SO BAD MY WIFE WONT RIDE IN MY TRUCK. THEY TOLD ME TO SWITCH GAS BRANDS,HAVE TRIED THEM ALL.( IN 4000 MILES YOU CAN FILL UP A 6.0LITER

MANY TIMES)I HAVE HAD PEOPLE DRIVING BEHIND ME TELL ME IT REEKS.

I'M GOING TO BE SENDING IN FOR A WESTERS PCM SOON AND WOULD LIKE TO FIND THE PROBLEM FIRST.ANY THOUGHTS ON THIS? NEW MEMBER,LOVE THIS SITE ,THANKS.:mad:

Do you make alot of short trips?

My wifes van gets driven alot of short trips and it's not driven very hard and it has a smell to it... If I get behind the wheel and "cuff" on it a little or if we run it a couple hundred miles the smell goes away for a month or so.

Welcome to the forum, and I'm glad you enjoy it. Stick around and join in the fun!!!

(just so you know, when you type in "caps" it means you're yelling!!! LOL!!!)

Sure you don't have the 6.6 Duramax under there?

Just kidding, my 6.0L never had a problem like that, hope you can get it corrected  Do you see any smoke coming out?

Yes i do make alot of short trips,no smoke, but there is

some black soot in tailpipe.( hey maybe i do have the

diesel , lol) engine seems to lack power at times but i

did manage an accidental burn out the other day.Got on

it about 3/4 throttle on dry pavement and left about 20 '

black marks. surprised the hell out of me,w/having 285/MTR's

hope a westers pcm will help wake this thing up.

Make a few of your short trips in town with overdrive off. Or go out on the highway and drive a couple miles with overdrive shut off. Sounds to me that you gotta take the truck out for a good rip. Alot of times a little more RPM helps clean things out.

Usually burning tranny fluid stinks like sh*t. (From my experience) Kind of like sewage. Maybe your trans if having problems but is holding up good because its new. Do you notice the smell when you are hanging high in a gear or is it all the time. Drive it really conservative to see if it still smells.

Mine used to stink when I drove it hard ? It's the converter doing it's job and burning up the excess hydrocarbons. If it doesn't go away you may be overfuelling. A bad sensor will set a code, with light(SES) but a screwy sensor might not. If the problem doesn't go away, with normal driving, fully warmed up etc. you should take it back to the dealer and have them check into it a littlle further. If your O2 sensor sees a continuous rich condition, it may set a code.
