Transmission Help!

Recommended Posts

Rebuilding my 1994 Chevrolet 2500 Silverado.

Engine is 5.7, and question is this. I recently called a local dealer to order a crate 5.7 and Transmission, the vin #'s I gave him came up as a 5.7 w/4l60E transmission. I thought all 2500's came with 4L80E Tranny's?

To the point! My truck is what might be considered as a light duty truck, this may have something to do with the transmission being a 4L60. It has 6 lug wheels, and thats a dead giveaway.

I was told that I needed to get a number off the transmission in order for them to order the correct replacement. I was also told this number is located on top of the transmission. How do you check for this number with out dropping the transmission? I don't need my truck to be out of service for an extended period of time. Truck gets the new motor/tranny, new A/C and then off to the body shop. Didn't realize there were more than 1 model 4L60E offered?

Its been a fine truck, has 230K without any majors at all. I want to do this right, so what is the best route for a transmission? I will be towing many many miles in the next few years, and some have said the 4l60E will not do the job. But need affordable dependable transportation, and its never let me down. Any suggestions? I'll be towing a 3000 lbs trailer, all over the eastern United States till May. I expect 25000 miles this year towing, as well as 10-15 around home.

Thanks, looking forward to replies.

Since your truck has 6 lug wheels, you probaly ( I am almost certain) have the 4L60E tranny.

However, since the trailer you are pullung is only 3000 pounds I think you should be ok.

I am not a expert though, yet I have the 1997 Silverado with 8 lugs wheels , she has the 4L80 tranny.

Hope thsi helps a little.
