454 V8 VIN codes

I'm learning how to read the VIN to tell whether they are Vortec or not. I know that the Vortec 454's have "J" as the 8th digit, but I've seen some that have "K" and "N" as the digit. Are these the TBI's? And what are the 4-barrels..."W"? I've seen that on the VIN's too ('73-'87 BS).

 

Just tryin' to keep my info straight. Corrections are welcome if I'm wrong.

Are you more worried about the truck or just the motor? If the motor there should be a pad on the front of the block. this should be on the passengers side right below where the head bolts to the block. You can take the numbers and sometime letters and do an internet search or if you have a nice dealership the parts department can look them up.

All I'm trying to do is read the VIN number.... I guess it's just something for me to be able to do instead of looking under hood to see what it is.
