New 2500HD User Questions

Recommended Posts

Just picked up my new Chevy 2500HD, 4X4. 4.10 gears, Silver, LT model, loaded with everything, and traded in my Ford Supercrew. Hope you all don't mind few new user questions while getting to know this truck a bit after changing over from a Ford.

First one deals with the tailgate. How do you lock the tailgate so it can't be stolen? More to follow...

Ask away.....I'm not sure you can lock it....I believe the only way would be to replace the factory handle with a locking aftermarket one. Of couse I have an 02 so they may have changed that, but if you got a hand....you can open mine.

im guessing this is tounge in cheek, and your not going to bore us with a bunch of questions trying to hopelessly prove some point right?

If your being serious though, i appologize and NO, chevy doesnt have a tailgate lock on their new rides. I never really needed one, but i can see the practicality of it in some ways. If someone wants a tailgate bad enough to risk me seeing them open it and unhook it, and take off with it slung over their shoulder.....than good luck to em'. Another option is to buy one off of E-bay for $19.99. Cant wait to hear the rest of your questions.

Wasn't planning on it Linda.

Yes I am serious. People around here get the gates stolen all the time. It is one of the differences between the HD and the SC that I noticed. Appology accepted, relax.

OK. Want to talk tires and lifts next? Or perhaps supercharger?

You can buy an aftermarket locking handle... I'm not sure why GM doesn't offer that at least as a $25 option. If you have a fiberglass cap (or something similar) it would be nice to be able to keep everything secure inside.

I know that in Pittsburgh, alot of dealers remove the tailgates from their new trucks that are sitting on the lots. That's because they actually do get stolen!!!

Congrats on the new truck. I have never worried about the tailgate not locking as I have always had a fiberglass lid with a lock on it.

Around here in Illinois, I haven't seen or heard any stories with stolen tailgates. The bigger problem seems to be with stolen spare tires. And since my truck didn't come with the $15 spare lock (which use to be standard!), I need to go buy a cable and lock.

couple more new to Chevy HD questions.

Since I have a 4.10 rear end, and am not used to the high rpms, what rpms are your turning at 30mpm, 50mph, and 70mph?

I have also installed 16X8 MT Classic Locks, with MT 285X75X16 MT Baja Radial MTX which will lower my rpms. Just curious as to what is "normal" after coming from ford w/3.73.

Also the tranny temp runs about what on your hd trucks?

well, im not sure about the 30 and 50...but i think with my 4.10's at 70Mph in O/D i am turning about 2050....with out the O/D i think its about 2750-2800rpm.

After warm up (I have the Allison) it runs around 140-150 degrees, thats not towing anything.

I have the 6.0L with 4:10, 4 spd auto and I am turning about 2500 at 70 mph.

Right now the tranny temp barely moves off the 100 degree mark, but we still have cool temperatures. Since I just got the truck I couldn't tell you what to expect during the summer months.

Here is an XM Radio question for those of you with the built in XM. How do you get the radio to tell you the song name and artist? When I press info it tells me no info. On my last aftermarket XM system, XM would tell you the channel name/number, title of song and artist.
