Another airbox question

Recommended Posts

After putting the supercharger kit in, with the supplied K&N filter. It seems kinda contradictory to put in a better flowing air filter, when the airbox is sucking through such a small slot?? Anyone else notice this? The performance doesn't seem to suffer but it just seems kinda odd that they would go to the trouble of supplying a high flow filter when it is just pulling through such a small opening. The thing must pull air through hard under boost. i hope it doesn't dislodge the foam insulation. :shakehead:

You can always open the inlets up some or take them out completely. They will both just pop out but then you won't have them pulling cool air from outside the engine, it'll be warmer air from the engine compartment. I ported (or whatever you want to call it) mine. I took the airbox out and opened up both openings with a Dremel tool. I ground off all the excess plastic and made the plastic openings as large as the foam insulator around them. The I reinstalled the airbox and found the fender openings were now smaller and outlined them with a black marker. Removed the airbox and used a grinding bit on my drill to open both the fender openings to the marked line around them. I'd say it opened the upper opening maybe 10-15% and the lower opening 30-40%. I figured that was plenty of air because they use the same airbox for the 8.1L, if it feeds enough air to that engine, it should be enough for my 5.3L..

I remember seeing an install of a magnacharger on a yellow truck in sport truck magazine awhile back where they opened up the fender openings to the stock air box to let more air in. You could also add a custom ram-air setup to the stock air box & pull air in from the opening beside the fog lights. For my set-up I decided on modifying and installing a volant cold air intake with the ram air tube.
