Stepper Motor Direction

Ok this is a general question and not related to UCCNC but I hope someone can help.
I have a machine that uses UCCNC and it runs fine with no issues.
I am now trying to set up an old Triac PC with a UC400 ETH, UCCNC with a 2017 screen set and a computer running Windows 7 Pro.
I have the motors connected and all 3 axes have the same problem. If I press the axis button to control the negative direction the axis moves, sometimes negative and sometimes positive, seemingly completely random, if I press the axis plus button the dro changes but the stepper motor does not move (

I am thinking I have somehow got the wiring of the A+, A-, B+ and B- to the drive wrong but have no idea how to change it. The motors are old and I can't tell what color is what. I still have the original control box although it is not being used. Where the motors are connected like A1, A2, B1, B2 so I think of A1 and A2 as step addition and subtraction and B1 and B2 as direction addition and subtraction.

Any help or pointers in the right direction would be helpful.
