2016 oil pan rtv question?

Recommended Posts

So my mechanic installed my lower oil pan today on my 2016 Silverado 5.3 and we waited 1hour to torque the bolts down. I also let the truck drain for 4 days prior to install because I broke a bolt that I guess was torqued too many times. The install went well new pan from GM but oil just running after a few hours. When we installed it it was bone dry but after 3 hours I saw a small wet spot near a corner  mating surface. I use permetex ultra black will this eventually dry after 24 hours air do I have to do this again? We also didn’t scuff up the pan because the dealer techs said not to.

I'd just wait until tomorrow, clean it off with some brake cleaner and see if the wet area comes back. If it does, you'll have to do it over again.

I never wait an hour either, I might snug the pan up and wait 10 minutes and then torque it down. Then just let it sit for an hour before I add oil and let the engine get hot.

That’s the thing I didn’t add oil yet. The oil that’s I guess up in the valve train is what keeps running down after a few days.

There's a 10 minute work time per GM using their specified RTV.  So applied to the lower pan, put the pan up and torque to spec.

Also, you should have let the pan sit overnight after torqued and then fill with oil.  Its the only way we do them after we had some techs put oil right away only to come back leaking the next day.

Torque spec is 88 in.lbs and in a specific sequence.  Oh, and the lower pan is a one time use component so you need another pan now also.

Yup I did all that. I didn’t add oil at all. It’s been sitting since Friday without oil. The oil that’s keeps coming down is small amounts. I put the rtv then waited an hour to torque and the plan was to fill after 24 hours. I attached a pic of the leak. The surface was bone dry when we installed it. From some off reason it doesn’t want to behave.
