This is exactly what they did to mine. And again what's it supposed to fix?

As near as I can tell from a conversation with service advisor and a document I found online. Fixes a potential problem with the battery draining after an over the air update.

Here is the GM document.

I think there are 4 versions of N24243563 as mine was N24243563-04

The initial document I found without the -04 had different info.

The -XX seems to be like a revision number. For example, the one you linked is -03 and would be superceded by a -04 version of the document.

The revisions will add VIN's, but it may also update specific fixes that are being targeted. My understanding is that this recall will address the specific concern listed (possibly why it's being done as a recall since it's important that everyone gets it and many, like me, refuse to allow the OTA's due to historical issues) but may also address other problems that would have otherwise been addressed through an OTA. We shall see if I ever get my truck back as I will look to see whether there's a pending OTA or not afterward. And I do know that a software update released somewhere in the last few months or so specifically addressed the HVAC fan cut-out and radio audio drop-out issues at startup...

I also know from my own personal experience that the Data Gateway is a critical piece in these vehicles - every single component that has any sort of communications / monitoring associated with it has that data pass through this ONE module. If anything there is off, it can cause a meltdown of the truck...

Recall notice that comes up in the phone app also says:

"Certain model years and vehicle makes noted in the table above may have a condition where where the battery is at risk for a drain following an over-the-air update".

and

"Dealers are to reprogram the serial data gateway module and the radio"

My 2024 RST goes in tomorrow morning for the update.  I have both the A/C fan speed issue and the radio volume issue.  The email notification I received also says this will "optimize the vehicle for future over-the-air updates".  My fingers are crossed.  We shall see!

That is what I was told for my previous software update a few weeks ago when I took it in.

That's a way so say it without acknowledging that sometimes OTA process was faulting and then draining the battery

That's a generic way to admit that the OTA process was borked from the start due to bad software on the module and the only way to correct it was via a manual reprogramming (recall).

That's another way of saying what I said.

Otoh,  OTA didn't always fail.

Define "fail." The one and only OTA I did on my truck -seemed- to be fine... Until all sorts of weird stuff started happening.

Also, due to what seems like a fairly significant number of trucks that were 'bricked' due to bad OTA updates, it definitely seems like GM determined that their OTA process and the underlying software that is/was the base firmware of that module was the root cause and needed a manual update to correct the issue and ensure the problems didn't persist.

Mine has had at least 4 OTA's.

At little over a year since the last one and still no issues.

I'd say they didn't fail.

Yes, we've all read posts from those that ended up needing service after an OTA attempt.

I'd say those were clearly fails.

Right, but what I'm saying is my OTA went fine. Then things slowly deteriorated over the next 45 days with no indication of what was going on. The fix, ultimately, was to manually reprogram the gateway module because the software had been corrupted.

When i say "define fail", I mean you have to look at the update as a whole. Just because things may have appeared to continue to operate correctly after an OTA doesn't mean that the OTA didn't cause an issue that hasn't (yet) reared its head. Impacts were very different for those that experienced noticeable issues. My truck wasn't 'bricked', but after a week at the dealer to try and fix a laundry list of complaints I had, they handed it back having found absolutely nothing (purely because there "were no codes") and it threw up all over itself halfway home with every possible error it could have thrown. THAT'S when they went "oh! those problems!" and actually did some troubleshooting to find the problems and fix them.

How about the 2017 silverado radio! Won't hold stations,  affects my information center as well.

Completely different radio.

Have it diagnosed at the dealer.  Probably a bad touch screen or HMI module.

Yes, the OTA could have introduced a hidden problem that later appeared.

But just as easy, the hidden problem could have been there all along and the OTA had nothing to do with it.

My trucks has lots of running since its last OTA (over a year and about 20,000 miles ago and it hasn't had 'issues'.

It scheduled for the 'recall' tomorrow.

Hard to know for sure since it isn't clear what version of the software is flashed on these modules from the factory. Given that the recall has been expanded to include more vehicles from more model years, it's possible that it was originally introduced as an OTA and has maybe also been found on newer trucks if they were already flashed with the newer software from the factory.
