new radio update recall N242435631

Recommended Posts

I didn't receive anything in the mail from GM yet but noticed on the my chevrolet app that my truck is affected by the recall N242435631 regarding a need to update the radio and serial communication firmware on the truck. From that others have said it looks like it updates you 2 editions for the android OS from android 10 to android 12 and some other fixes like the bug of the audio stopping at random. I had my truck in for it's annual inspection and they said to come back in a few weeks and drop the truck off for the recall because they have had it take 4 hours to update the radio.

What has the outcome been for those affected by the issue? How long was your truck out of service for while the dealer took care of the update? My radio isn't finding any OTA updates after the GM screw up a year ago where the OTA update bricked my transfer case module due to a wiring issue that had high resistance between the HMI and TCCM.

I really hope this update doesn't land my truck in the shop for another 2 weeks like last years f-up.

A) The slated time allotted for this update appears to be two hours based on the conversation I had with the Service Writer when I made my appointment.

B) The length of time indicated is apparently "enough" that GM will cover the cost of a loaner / rental.

C) My truck went in this morning for this update along with a couple of other small items to check / correct under warranty. I will not be getting my truck back at this point until AT LEAST Monday because...

They fried the Serial Data Gateway module in my truck attempting to perform the update. According to what the Service Writer told me when he called, they attempted to perform the update and when they connected the module they use to do the programming, it shorted out the Gateway Module and my truck is now sitting in a bay in their garage, completely dead.

They apparently located a part with another dealer in this region and were attempting have it brought in by end of day today, but there's no confirmation on that. If it doesn't show today, then they would expect to see it Monday. When they DO get the part, they will have to install it and perform diagnostics to determine if anything else got fried as well.

Based on GM's "not quite in time" method of stocking and delivering parts, I have zero confidence that I will get my truck back on Monday and would not be at all surprised if it ends up sitting on their lot for quite a while. My service experience with GM over the last four years or so has now just simply become comical.

We shall see...

The Chevrolet/GMC dealer in Stanleytown, VA, performed this recall on my 2024 2500HD Denali Ultimate while there for its 1st oil change on September 16th. They told me the update could take anywhere between 12 minutes and 2 hours. Of course mine took the full 2 hours. I have noticed no change in any of the truck's systems and operations.

One of the changes it is supposed to bring that I am looking forward to is one that you may not have noticed needing to be fixed...

If you start the truck when it's hot inside the cab, and you have the HVAC set to AUTO, it kicks on full blast initially. As the radio goes through its startup process, the audio will cut out multiple times and return, but the first drop-out coincides with the fan speed dropping down to the lowest setting and basically just staying there. The software update is supposed to fix that along with the audio drop-out issues so that neither of those things occurs going forward.

I just got this email (nothing on my app at all).

Rich, your Chevrolet Silverado is due for a software update that must be performed at a dealership. This update will provide software improvements and optimize your vehicle for future over-the-air updates. Once completed, your vehicle will have up-to-date technology, including the latest infotainment features, performance enhancements and more

When I called dealer they told me it was for battery drains caused by a recent update.

were you affected by the plagued update back in September 2023? My truck was and it had to get a new transfercase control module just to find out after 2 weeks of the dealer screwing around that they found a wire with high resistance and needed to repair the harness to get the data to pass and update the rest of the modules. This time last year was a pain because of the GM strike so nobody was working and the parts weren't being made with how many modules they fried in the process.

After the update last september my truck has seen 0 OTA updates, even when I force check for them. Granted i'm not paying for onstar so i'm not sure if that is the reason but I use my mobile hotspot from my phone to my truck and paired up to my home WiFi and the only updates i've ever had were for the google play store and the apps within the play store.

I don't know about the 9/23 update. My truck is a 2024, and I bought it (late Oct. '24) about a month after it hit the dealer's lot. I do know that an OTA hit it within a couple of weeks but I couldn't tell you when it may have been originally released. A couple of weeks after that, the problems started. Passenger side lane assist wasn't working correctly, touch screen wasn't responding correctly, EPB setting itself pretty much constantly (on level surfaces), CEL that was triggered by ABS "communications" problems, and a bunch of other stupid stuff. Dealer had it a week, did pretty much NOTHING, and handed it back. On the way home, CEL, Reduced Power, Service Steering Column Lock (which my truck doesn't have), and every other possible error you could imagine. Went right back to them with a case from Chevy and they had it another week before they reprogrammed the Gateway Communications Module due to software corruption (potentially, the same module they fried on the truck with this visit).

Since the CEL / ABS issue, I have turned off all OTA's and refuse to allow them any more on the truck due to how many people are having problems with them causing issues - including "bricking" their trucks in their driveways.

How to you check OTA updates to see what has been done and turn if off if you choose to?

With the wife's 23 Yukon Denali, there is a list on the GMC app under vehicle status. Gives a full list as what has been done, and when.

Nothing like that in the app for my Chevy.

Yes there is, go to vehicle status and it's under update. It's hidden.

The easy way to see if you have the new update is look at your radio update screen, if it still shows android version 10 then you're on the old version. Android 12 is the new one part of the new feature update from what i've been finding. I'm a few weeks out before mine gets serviced at the dealer.

There is no "Update" section under Vehicle Status on my app. I have looked through every section of the app and there's nothing there.

Try

vehicle status > then scroll to bottom > select software > select view install history > mine lists 4 updates from Aug 2023

The app should also list the recalls.

On main screen select 'help centre' instead of 'my vehicle'

-then select 'recall and warranty'

Scroll down to recall section

It defaults to 'incomplete' and lists the open ones

Picking 'complete' lists the completed ones.

Zero info.

However, I'm wondering if that's because the module is fried and the truck can't report information properly at this point?
