2010 to a 2024 model year towing question ?

Recommended Posts

Hi group, I have a 2010 double cab Silverado z71 4x4 with a 5.3 and 3.08 gears. I also pull a 5000 pound fiberglass Escape 5.0 5th wheel camper ( designed for a 1/2 ton).

the truck does not really have a ton of power in the hills and on take off but pulls great otherwise. I attribute that to the gears in the rearend and the number of trans gears.

would I notice a huge difference and be MUCH happier with a newer 2024 Silverado, crew cab, max tow with the 5.3 and the 3.42 gears and 10 speed trans? Noticeable difference? My understanding this has about 35 more HP and about 40ft/pounds more torque then my 2010 5.3. Is this noticeable?

I like the 6.2 engine but too many problems I see guys having with bearings, rods, lifters , etc…….more then just the 5.3 lifters that are out there.

I welcome your input from those who have ad both experiences with the above combos……

I went from an '11 5.3 Tahoe with tow package to my '23 6.2 Silverado. Better on fuel by 3-4 mpg and tons more power.

Old 5.3 had lifter issues on some also. I had zero problems over 150k miles with the old truck with proper full synth. oil changes.

Going to the 6.2 made the old 5.3 feel like it was a V6.

Really comes down to what is cheaper and a better option for you.

I would install 3.73's in the 2010 and have the computer tuned. That is far cheaper than buying a new truck.

But a new truck with a warranty that has more power and a better transmission is nice too. Just much more money to go that route.

How is your 6.2 doing? I really want this engine but I keep reading all the issues with rods, bearings and of course the lifters…..too many to count on numerous forums.

25k miles now, zero issues with drivetrain. Online I read issues with the old 5.3 but it's the internet, you never hear success stories, only issues. I had no issues with the old 5.3 in my Tahoe over 150k miles yet the doom and gloom appeared all the time with cylinder deactivation. Quality synth. oils and proper maintenance are the key to longevity.

5% of anything made will have defects, the more made the higher numbers appear. I'm not worried about my 6.2. This tank is faster than my '68 GTO.
