Parts needed for lifter rebuild

Recommended Posts

my 2019 5.3 driver side lifter is bad. Mechanic said I only need to rebuild one side as at a time as he charges a flat rate per side.

I tried searching Google and there doesn't seem to be a "rebuild kit" Parts department aren't mechanic so they can only quote me on what they think I'll need. Is there a recommend part to replace? I plan on redoing all lifters on the one side since it's already popped opened.

If you are removing a head, it only takes another hour to remove and reinstall the other.  It is best to replace both sets of lifters, the cost to do one head vs two should be minimal as far as labor is concerned.  Parts on the other hand are considerably more since the cost of the lifters is the most expensive part.

I replaced all the lifters in my 5.3, and if I remember correctly, the parts I purchased included:

1.  Head Gasket

2.  Intake Gaskets

3.  HP Fuel Lines

4.  Exhaust Manifold Gaskets

5.  Exhaust Collector Gasket Ring

6.  Exhaust Collector Gasket Donut

7.  Engine Coolant

8.  Engine Oil

9.  Engine Oil Filter

10.  Lifters

11.   Lifter Trays

12.  Pushrods

13.  Head Bolts

14.  Exhaust Manifold Bolts

15.  Spark Plugs

I want to say that I spent close to $2,000 in parts, give or take a couple hundred, with the lifters being the most expensive percentage of costs.  I didn't have any lifter tick, but I had 130K miles on the engine so I tore it down and replaced them to be safe.

However, if you have a known lifter issue, you will probably need to pull the cam shaft as well since it will most likely have lobe damage.  I would pay really close attention to the lifter rollers as you pull them to see if there is any damage to them.  If there is ANY damage to the lifter rollers, there is damage to the cam shaft and it will need to be pulled and replaced as well.  Putting good lifters on a bad cam will result in you doing everything again in 2 weeks.

If your lifter wiped out the cam;  you'd be foolish not to tear down the whole engine and rebuild.  If the cam is toast;  it most likely sent shrapnel thru the whole engine, possibly damaging some/all bearings, oil pump, cylinder walls, lifter bores, vacuum pump, etc. before even some of it got caught by the oil filter.

125,3xx miles on my total rebuild in 3.5 years.  Deleted AFM, new cam (BTR....mild upgrade), new oil pump, vacuum pump, bearings, valve springs, etc................just like mentioned above.  ECM done by LT1 swap.com...............but I've got a 2016............but essentially the same, save for tuning/ECM.

Granted you've the latest generation.................the ECM is what adds to the $$$$$

Time and money to rebuild, put in a crate motor if youre going to keep it longer.

Bingo.  If my lifters ever fail and I need a rebuild, I'll just purchase a crate motor.  Cheaper and quicker to do.

Yet GM refused to do this for mine, and the motor sounds like garbage after getting it back, vibrates at idle and has intermittent misses. But I'm told by GM "they don't notice anything wrong".

Some more bad news, looks like my cam is shot as well. a $1500 job just turned into a 3500 labor only job. Gotta pull the motor to replace the cams.

AFM delete kit from AMS is about 1600, so for about $5500-6000 to get it running again with the delete.

How much is a crate motor going for?
