Snow tires

Recommended Posts

I know someone who has driven 60 miles each way for work on  mountain roads. Part of the road isn't plowed between 8pm and 6am, rural mountains.

AWD, studded snows and carry's chains.

I'm sure in the mountains that's the norm.

I'm in Maine on the coast right now. Snow in the forecast for NH & VT. Not looking forward to the drive home to the Canadian border in less than stellar conditions.

Swapped over the winter wheels/Hakkapeliitta studded LT3 tires today. I popped out one of the GMC center caps to put on one of the winter wheels and couldn't get it to snap on. Worked at it for a bit and gave up. The GMC center cap snapped right back on the OEM wheel. My winter wheels came with Chevy center caps and they snapped on the those wheels with no problem. So, Chevy center caps it is and at least they are black. I used the OEM lug nuts.

Set the air pressure to 55psi, just like the OEM wheels/KO3's I took off and learned the TPMS sensors with my Autel TS508. Went for a ride in the neighborhood and re-checked the lug nut torque at 140 foot pounds.

Will go for a ride on the interstate to test for balance and smooth ride. The KO3's rode smooth up to 80 mph.

Edit: Took a ride on the interstate up to 85 mph, smooth ride. It is new blacktop so any balance issues should be apparent.

Took one of the front wheels off today to compare the GMC center cap to the Chevy center cap. I didn't do it yesterday as I was trying to get the wheels swapped over. The GMC OEM wheel has a higher location for the clips. The winter wheels, whatever they are, have a shallower location for the clips. I didn't take a pic of the Chevy center cap but took one of the GMC. The Chevy caps are even around by the clips. The GMC one is longer in between the clips. I could cut them even to use them but will probably look for another set to make fit with the winter wheels.

A thought came to mind after reading the other 'active' tire thread.

What specs or parameters differentiate a M+S tire and 1 marked w/ this icon?

From Michelin:

Essentially, what it means is that that specific tire was tested in severe snow conditions and either met, or exceeded industry standards and performance requirements. This symbol can be found on winter tires. On the other hand, M+S stands for mud and snow.
