What transmission is compatible

Recommended Posts

Hi my mother's truck has a issue with the transmission.  One day it just stopped doing anything in gear and you can move the selector but when in gear it don't move forward or backward and the fluid is full and don't smell burnt. I figured it would of started slipping before just going out completely.  Also what transmission is compatible with her truck. It's a Silverado 4x4 crew cab I believe it's the 5.3. The truck code is k10753. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

what year is it? Also check on the driver's side of the transmission and make sure the cable didn't pop off for the shifter.

Most likely it's a 6L80. Probably the easiest way to check out shifter in M and start pushing the "+" button until numbers on dash stop going up. If it stops at 6, it's a 6L80. If it stops at 8, it's the 8L90

Just to add to this, that's exactly what happened to mine back in June. Driving down a back road in Alabama and suddenly it wouldn't accelerate and kept slowing down. I pulled to the side, tried shutting the truck off and restarting, and it wouldn't move. No forwards ir backwards. No strange noises before hand and no warning. I ended up needing a new transmission.

The weak point on these is the torque converters. They fail and send metal shavings into the trans which destroys them. It's not a cheap fix but if you get a remanufactured GM transmission, they come with a 3 year 100,000 mile warranty. It will set you back in the neighborhood of $5000+ but still better than having to buy a new truck.

So, if anyone needs a torque converter and wants to get something that can take more load, Sonnax makes a triple faced clutch (dual disc) kit.  The torque converter reman shop would have to build it up.  You might find more information on the Sonnax site.  Maybe even a list of  some of the reman shops that build converters.
