External oil cooler, anyone have suggestions on a kit?

Recommended Posts

Looking  to add one and wondering what experience you have and or any recommendations with it.

No really heavy towing etc, just looking to help prolong the life of the pathetic and sickly 2020 6.2 that GM made out of Chinese scrap metal.

TIA

The factory engine oil cooler is quite sufficient.  Why do you think it needs more?

Honestly I was ignorant to the fact that it had one, TBH  I just looked it up after your statement and funny thing is the search showed a recall for leaking oil cooler lines!  GM really blew it with these engines, I have great power and love it but carrying a 55 gallon drum of oil with me on trips just has me pissed and looking for any solution to try and extend the life of it. Thanks

Get a Scan Gauge III and see what the oil temperature is doing. You'll love that toy anyway and it's transferable to others in your fleet.

Anyway.... I'm not going down the "Full Synthetics will take the heat" argument because oxidation isn't the immediate concern with heat. Viscosity loss is. And you don't have much with a shelf 0W20 after shear down, GDI dilute down and now heat it down.

Water cooling and even an oil heat exchanger is not a guarantee your temps will be under 212F/100C under all operating conditions. Over 180 F and under 210 F is a splendid target. But check it. You can run too cool as well and that has its own set of issues. Look at it before you leap. To cool happens allot in vehicles that are never run more than a few miles or minutes at a time. The cure there is more frequent oil changes.

So. To the question...Improved Racing | High Performance Oiling System Parts

A thermostat in the loop is a great idea. Talk to them for help with the setup. If you even need one.

Quick story. I was running Pepper one day in a hilly area where manual was in order, and I forgot I was in 4th gear when we got back on a main highway. As quite as she is I didn't notice her spinning near 5K rpm right away, but my oil temperature went through the roof. Over 260 F! Normal for this motor is just under 200F.

This is a normal condition for those towing long grades and they never give it a thought. Bearing temps are at least 75 F higher than the pan temperature. Got an immediate oil change.

So reading your other threads, you've got an oil consumption issue you are still dealing with?

An additional oil cooler won't help an oil consumption problem.  You need to address the consumption, be it a leak or worse stuck oil control rings that are letting oil past.

There are some less invasive options to attempt if its a stuck ring issue like BG EPR or more stronger their BG Dynamic Engine Cleaner

Trying some Advanced Lubricants engine cleaner now with a straight 30 grade diesel engine oil for 3k miles with a filter change at 500 miles.

then will use a Higher quality designer synthetic and at least a 5-30w with another cleaning product that was suggested to me but in  a measure amount to "prevent" buildup not to clean it.

Product is called AutoRX plus.

This I HOPE will "fix" the consumption issue, truck has 49k on it amd has had a pretty good life of oil changes and premium fuels.
