I'm so confused....I don't want to let my beloved gasser go....

Give me a track hoe and I'll get both of them out. The maintainer is going to have to be dug out at the back end to facilitate removal.

What genius thought the FE loader was going to do anything?

Grader maintainer  was the only thing permanently hung up and got it out last night. Genius is appropriate nomenclature for alternate reality the operators live in.

And finally Jet will be getting his big new screen with a diesel to go along with it. Nothing said in this thread will change what is already in motion lol

like I said.....they already know the answer before asking

never seen one of these where it didnt happen and Ive done the same exact thing as well, lol

I think full time putting that many miles in towing I would consider the Dually, just makes it that much more stable in nasty conditions

a long bed for sure...

The 3500 single rear wheel has no issues towing this size 5th wheel and the long bed is just an individual preference rather than a necessity. I have a Curt 16k hitch and no issues with either of my standard bed trucks. The puck system makes a slider hitch no longer necessary on the standard bed.

The long bed and the duals make it a lot harder to use as a daily driver.

Of course its still buyers choice and whoever is laying down the bucks gets to ultimately make the decision.

From what he described I’m not sure he really is going to be towing long distance all that many days a year. I had the impression he was describing a yearly North/South migration kind of thing with additional trips now and then. The rest of the time he has to live with the truck as a daily driver. If he does a lot of short trip use as a daily driver the dpf/regen behavior is a downside. I suspect that plus the extra purchase and maintenance cost is part of why he’s looking for advice on what’s the right compromise.

I certainly could be wrong in my reading between the lines. I was seeing “living in the thing” as periods where the trailer sits in one location and he’s using the truck as a daily driver.

It'll do the job.  I'll get terrible gas mileage and rev a lot, but it'll do the job.  I've seen plenty of gas trucks with large 5ers and toy haulers out here in the west.

It will do it, you need to tow the trailer and see how well.  What's the payload capacity of that 2500?  The pin weight of the trailer is 2190lbs.  If you are within a few hundred pounds, maybe consider a 3500 SRW truck.

I've read all of your replies and I appreciate all of them.  I really do.  So I went on this quest and called around to different camper sellers asking them if they had one that weighed around 15k empty that I could hook up to and do a towing test.  They all declined my request.  I get it, there's a lot of liability there but I wanted to see what my truck felt like and how it would do with 15k on a fifth wheel hitch.  Nope, not happening.  So it leaves me wondering, will my 6 speed gasser be fine or not?  I know it falls within the limits posted on my door jamb.  But will it be a comfortable towing experience or not?  I guess I won't know until I buy one and load it up.

Can you rent one for 24 hrs? Got any friends with one?

I have a friend with a Torque Model? that he just bought.  Apparently it's a toy hauler?  He has a 21 2500 diesel and he said it is over his truck payload limits but he put airbags in and he said his truck pulls it just fine.

We are looking at buying a 15k fully loaded 5th wheel.  It of course falls into specs of what my 22 gasser will tow and payload rated.  But will it?  That's the very expensive to me question I've been asking myself since we decided on buying the Grand Design 2903RL  I know it falls into specs of what my gasser is rated for but should I?  Will it be ok with that kind of weight without dogging it too much or should I just send up the red flag and say screw it?  Buy a damn diesel and get it over with?  The thing that bothers me so much is that my gasser has been amazing from day 1.  It's friggen perfect to me, I absolutely LOVE it.  But....and I say But....I don't "think" it will tow that much weight all over the US with ease....if any of you are towing a 5th wheel with a gasser that weighs that much, with the 6 speed trans, please comment....I would like to hear what you all think.

I think you can be quite confident that it will not pull it all over the US with ease.  A 15k lb 5th wheel is not only heavy but will also push a huge amount of air.  Could you do it?  Sure, but it will be slow, noisy, burn lots of gas, and not with "ease".

I'm in the market for a new truck and just found this forum a couple days ago.  The trailers I pull are only about half the weight you're talking about but they are boxy and pushing through the air is what really works my current vehicle.  I know I don't "need" a diesel for what I'm towing but I'm sure leaning that way.  If I was towing even bigger and heavier like you're talking about I wouldn't just be leaning toward diesel, I would be buy it.

That was really easy deciding what someone else should spend their money on, wish it was that easy to decide what to spend mine on.....  I wish you luck with your decision.
