2024 Silverado ZR2 2500 6.6L gas engine failure

I agree. This was my second purchase with them because of how good the dealer is. The truck is still there and I received the first update from them yesterday. The service advisor told me it had a bad battery and that it could have caused the faults to occur. I told him I was aware that low voltage can cause modules and computers to not operate correctly however I didn't believe a bad battery will cause a mechanical noise (not normal) to come from what seemed to be the transmission. He agreed and advised me that they are still looking into it. The Chevy app currently shows a new code now. The wait continues but I am sure they will get it dialed.

Husbands 2023 truck with 40k miles is in the shop currently. He was having a ticking noise and a slow loss of power for a few months before they finally got it diagnosed. They also found metal in the oil pan. There are 2 more trucks just like his that have since come in with the same problem. They all need new engines. We live in a town of like 5000 ppl. We have filed with the GM buy back program because they’re just going to put that same crappy engine in it. Not to mention how the resale value is going to tank on these trucks after this gets out!

Yikes! Sorry to hear you all are having issues as well. Just today I called to get an update on my truck from the service department and to my surprise after a months long wait the truck is ready to be picked up. I will post a full update of what the dealer claims to be the issue this time.

Update on my truck: well this is starting to sound like a darn soap opera with all the drama surrounding my particular 2500 ZR2. However I feel I need to continue updating this thread just in case someone else runs into some of these issues. The service advisor had told me on a previous update that the only issue they found was a bad battery causing issues with transmission modules and engine modules. I told him that I agreed a bad battery could cause some issues however the issue I was having was not only that the truck would go into limp mode but also a mechanical sound coming from the transmission when in park. Also, when I would attempt to shut the vehicle off, the engine would turn off but all electronics including the blower fan would stay on. On July 5th when the truck was on the way on a flatbed to the dealer for these issues, I called ahead and reminded them about all electronics staying on when engine was shut off just so that they would be aware the battery might die at some point if the truck was left unattended after the flatbed driver dropped it off. The truck sat at the back of the dealer for approximately 3 weeks. Within these 3 weeks I called countless times too try and receive updates on the vehicle but for some reason I was never able to speak with my service advisor directly even after leaving messages for callbacks. He called me once during those 3 weeks to tell me there was a loner available so when I went to pick up the loaner he was not available so I was unable to speak with him again. Fast forward to yesterday, I call again to receive an update on my vehicle. I am told my vehicle is ready to be picked up and the final diagnosis was a bad battery that was replaced through warranty. This morning I picked up the truck and only made it 15 miles before the truck went into limp mode again. I immediately called the dealer back and let them know that I was having the issue again and I was going to do a u-turn and drop my truck off. When I spoke with the service advisor and expressed my frustration with this whole situation and informed him to please have the technicians go through the transmission through and through because I believe the issue was never a bad battery. I believe the battery went bad because it's sat at the dealer dead for a couple of weeks and that may have caused it to go bad. To me it seemed like the battery was changed under warranty, the codes were cleared, and they called it good to go. I talked to the manager and express my frustration as well and told him to please fix my truck. He informed me that the truck was already being looked at and promised to expedite the diagnosis and repairs. At this point I don't know what to think of the situation. I honestly just want my vehicle back working correctly. I understand that the lemon laws are there to protect us consumers. However I am giving them the opportunity to fix it before going that route.

It took them over three weeks to fix a 'bad' battery?

 

The battery probably went bad just like you suspect, in order to diagnose further they had to replace it. Battery replacement probably cleared all the codes and they were lost where to look next. No codes, no problem, come get your truck. What was being done during that three weeks?

I hear ya. I started mechanic work in 1985 including 2 dealers. One being Chevy. You would be surprised how a simple ground causes multiple problems. That fuse box and all the other faults got me thinking. If that`s a good thing.😕

I would be absolutely Livid bro.....incompetence I cannot tolerate

 

I hear more often than not that dealerships do not fix the truck and customer has to bring it back 2 or even 3 times....it is rare I hear yep they fixed it and everything is good.....you would have to think it costs GM a fortune to tear into a truck over and over cuz the mechanic didnt do his job right the first time

 

sorry to hear and I probably would have blown a gasket upon returning it which would have put me in a bad spot I am sure getting my truck back....

Part of the problem is that the vehicles get more complex and training and time for the diagnostics has not kept up with the electronics. These things are very complex. For what its worth I would call a lemon lawyer. It doesnt sound like this dealer has the resources and knowledge to actually repair this truck. I would serve them with a last chance to repair letter and forward that to Chevrolet (return receipt) 

What initially may have been wrong with your truck seems to now be damaging other items like the batteries. I dont think youre dealer is talented enough to repair it. They have resources through GM's technical assistance but it doesnt sound like they have utilized them. 

You have been way more patient than I would have been.

Update on the ongoing soap opera with my truck. 

 I called the dealer asking for an update yesterday and my service advisor told me that my truck would be going in tomorrow (as in today) to replace the automatic transmission manual shift shaft and that the truck would be done for sure by Saturday. Well this morning the service advisor called me back and told me when the tech dropped the transmission pan he found milky fluid and metal and that they determined it would need a new transmission and radiator. He told me there are no transmissions in stock at the moment and they have no ETA either. At this point i have been in a loner so long i feel like I purchased this base Silverado 1500 for the price of a 2500 ZR2. It's time to make that dreaded phone call to you all know who.

To simplify the ongoing situation with my truck here is a run down for anyone who is interested or my be going through similar issues. 

 

Purchase date March 22nd 2024
(6 miles)

First issue March 24th 2024
Taken to dealership on March 25th
Returned from dealership March 26th
(193 miles)
Truck died while being driven at 35 mph. Was able to safely bring the truck to a stop and called OnStar for support. I was stranded for 5 hours in a turning lane before a flatbed showed up to tow the truck home.
(Issue found by dealership)
Starter 400 amp fuse on battery fuse block blown.
(Dealership warranty repairs)
Battery distribution engine compartment fuse block replaced

2nd issue April 3rd 2024
Taken to the dealership April 3rd
Returned from the dealership April 13th

(Loaner vehicle provided by dealership )
Truck developed a loud engine knock when running. Took video recording of noise.
(Issue found by dealership)
Main bearing failure. Connecting rod bearing failure.

Engine replacement. Radiator replacement. High pressure fuel pump replacement. Flywheel or flexplate replacement in transmission.

Chevrolet app stated engine and transmission issues. All warning lights on dashboard turned on. Truck went into limp mode. When I would shut the engine down all electronics remained on as of the vehicle was running. When idling in park a mechanical noise from the transmission could be heard. Took a video recording of noise. The truck was towed to the dealership and I explained to the service advisor of the issues I encountered and sent the video recording of the noise coming from the transmission to a service advisor at the dealership.

Battery test failed. Bad battery cell.
(My concerns expressed to service advisor)
Upon receiving an update on the issues found by the dealership. I told The service advisor that I did not believe a bad battery could cause a mechanical noise to come from the transmission. The service advisor told me that that was the only issue found with the truck.

Replace battery.

5th issue July 31st
(Returned to the dealership same day July 31st)
(August 16th Truck has not returned from the dealership)

(Loner vehicle extended)
I returned the loaner vehicle and picked the truck up from the dealership. I only made it 30 miles down the road before the truck went into limp mode again showing the same faults on the dash and the Chevrolet app as it did on July 5th. I called the dealership right away and let them know I was doing a u-turn and returning the truck to them because it was having the same issue again. When I arrived at the dealership they provided me with the same loner I had just returned and told me they would look into the truck immediately. I again expressed my concerns to my service advisor. I told him that I disagreed with him and there findings of a bad battery being the issue. I told him again that there seemed to be a transmission issue. The service advisor told me they would look into the issue further and get back to me with an update. By the end of the day the service advisor called me and told me that the technician had found a fault code claiming the issue to be an (automatic transmission manual shift shaft). He told me they would order the part and that the technician would get to it once he was done with a new project he had been assigned to. On August 15th I called the service advisor and asked for an update on my truck. He told me that they would get the truck in that day and my truck should be ready by no later than Saturday August 17th. On August 16th the service advisor called me and told me that the technician had dropped the transmission fluid pan and had found a milky substance and metal shavings in the pan. Due to these findings he told me that my truck would need a new transmission and a new radiator. He said the antifreeze had mixed in with the transmission fluid. The service advisor said that there are no available transmissions at the time and they do not have an ETA as to when a transmission will be provided to them so that it could be replaced. 

 

The truck has spent a combined total of 56 days at the dealership as of today August 16th for all the different types of repairs it's needed.

I envy your patience, my friend! If this were my situation I'd have either asked the dealer to buy it back or lemon-lawed it by now. Whatever happens in the end I hope you're completely satisfied!

I am currently in the works of certain things that I can not say on here yet if you catch my drift haha. Just hope the process is quick and I am back on the road in a NEW truck cough cough. 🤞🤞
