2024 Silverado ZR2 2500 6.6L gas engine failure

Recommended Posts

I bought my 2024 2500 ZR2 with the 6.6 gas and the first week of ownership at 193 miles it died on me while heading home from dinner. Left me stranded in a turning lane for 5 hours before a big enough flatbed arrived to take the truck home at 2am. Luckily I was already in my neighborhood and not on a busy road. The next day another flat bed took it to the dealership and they found that the whole fuse block on top of the battery was blown. They replaced it and the truck was working fine. Until yesterday afternoon at 830 miles the engine developed a loud knock that would rise with RPM. After noticing it I got on the phone with the dealership to let them know I was driving straight over there. Dealership put me at the front of the list for a loaner due to the circumstances and sent me on my way. Today I heard back from the dealership and they informed me that upon removing the oil pan the tech found chunks of metal. With further inspection they found a spun bearing on the crank. They sent the info to GM and they will be replacing the engine. As of now the turn around time is 2 weeks. Needless to say I am very disappointed with the experience I've had with the new truck. The truck itself is beautiful and rides so smooth with the ZR2 suspension. The Allison transmission shifts amazing. But seems like GM QC was not to par with my particular unit.

Sorry to hear about your trucks problems, not good at all  ! How do these problems happen ? Somebody working while under some sort of impairment  on the assembly line ? Inferior parts batch ?

That particular bearing could have had an internal flaw or even a hairline crack not seen when it was assembled. Nothing is perfect. I didn’t see this thread before posting to your other post.

these things happen. rare, but they happen. just bad luck. when i blueprint a bottom end, we have specific oil clearances we like to see. i can ball mic 10 sets of clevite main bearings that are supposed to be the same and guess what...they arent. I can measure 5 Callies cranks that should be the same...and they arent. Same for blocks, rods, etc. Point is, we're a very custom low vol engine shop. GM is not. I highly doubt they're blueprinting bottoms ends etc. Nothing at all wrong with that for a production vehicle but occasionally there will be an issue

Hopefully it is just a coincidence. I actually an hour ago, was talking with a guy with a 2023 1500 with the 6.2, and for some reason IT, spun a bearing at 5,900 miles. Said they put a new motor in it.

... I was hopping the L8T was flawless, and still do, for the most part.

...

Being a retired lineman, i have seen different manufacturers, for various stuff, loose power for different reasons. That can, and could cause problems with parts, being made, i would assume, especially the ones that are cast, or rubber made.

Very few places have backup generators, so a bad part or parts could sneak by.

You see and I just traded in my 19 1500 with the 6.2 and it never gave me any issues. That engine was solid for me and the power was amazing. The only thing it needed at the end of my time with it was a new battery. Other than that all I did was the standard maintenance. Oil, plugs and filters. Traded it in with 115k miles. Crossing my fingers this is the last time something fails prematurely on the new truck .

sucks man, I would be pissed even though am well aware it can happen at anytime to anyone with any brand

Hopefully they get it squared away and in a year or so it will be a funny story and not gut wrenching shock like it is now

that is one beautiful truck, thank god for warranties on new vehicles and that they seem to be handling it fairly quickly

Update on the truck which currently has 10,614 miles. The engine was replaced and the truck had been driving fine up until the 10,000 mile mark. I noticed when coming to a stop the transmission would hard shift into first gear making it feel like you got rear ended at very slow speed. The truck would feel like it would push forward and then grab 1st gear. The transmission also at times hard shifts into gears when accelerating. Today I tried to turn on the truck with the remote and it would not turn on. When I got in the truck and physically turn it on , the dash read "Reduced acceleration. Drive with care" "service steering wheel column lock" "service esc" "service traction control".  The truck was limited to 38mph and was stuck in what appeared to be second gear. I was able to limp it home and once I got home the truck had a noise coming from under the truck but I was not able to pinpoint if it was the transmission or the engine. It was not a ticking sound like the one it made when the engine blew. Tomorrow morning I will have the dealer send a flat bed to come and take the truck in for service. Needless to say ownership of this new ZR2 has been stressful due to its mechanical issues. I will attempt to upload pics of the messages on the dash and a video of the noise it's making now. Screenshot_20240705_004502.thumb.jpg.71610c4b8d9fbfa13388b3480736d3a3.jpg

Not sure if TX has a lemon law, but it sure seems like yours is cursed...

Thankfully Texas does have a lemon law. There is several steps that need to take place before a vehicle is considered a lemon and the dealer must be given the time and chance to fix it. I agree with you on my particular unit being cursed 😮‍💨. The truck was picked up today and the service advisor told me it will be a couple days before they have a solid diagnosis. The waiting game begins...

Sorry to hear, that's really frustrating. I'd maybe ask the dealer if they'd help you out and buy it back at this point considering the price and how many major issues you've had. I had an issue with a 2018 Tundra with about 8k miles and my local dealer actually ended up buying it back for what I'd have gotten going the Lemon Law route (without actually having to Lemon Law it).

Whatever happens, I hope it all gets resolved to your satisfaction.

My first action would be to consult a Texas lemon law lawyer. Based on your posts you have been more than patient and its now time to cut a pony from the herd.

Sucks that you're having these issues. Patience & the dealer are your friends in situations like this. The dealer will worl for you because they know they may be able to sell you another truck.
