Dealerships

Recommended Posts

Okay here goes with more questions . Not sure what buying is like down in the USA as this pertains to me in Canada

Lets say you cant find what your looking for in a truck locally but see trucks you are interested on dealers lots 4 hours away .What is the warranty service like if you buy from said dealer but now you need warranty work done locally . Can that be a pain ?  I have a new dealership that just opened up 15 minutes away

Also has anyone approached a local dealer and mentioned Hey you don't have anything on your lot but there's something I like at a dealers lot  4 hours away . how does that work ?

As the local dealer has said they can bring one in from another dealer . I have been emailing with the dealer that is 4 hours away . Just don't want to cause any problems with the local dealer .

Thank You !

Not unusual for a dealer to make a trade with another dealer to get the vehicle you want. Ask your local dealer if they are willing to do it.

A GM dealer is a GM dealer, they will do the service work no matter what. They don't care where the vehicle was bought when it come to service work or warranty work, so long as it is still under warranty.

Around here it's unlikely that a dealer will move cars between them. Maybe if it's owned by the same owner but still unlikely.

Dealer trades happen all the time. The problem is that if someone (you) show interest in a truck, the dealer is unlikely to trade it.

have bought several trucks out of state......4 in the last few years, warranty is the same regardless of where you buy and frankly in my experience they can give 2 ****** where you purchased from......service work is service work and big moneymaker for any dealer

some dealers only trade with certain ones so it would have to be in their " network" so to speak....at least here on west coast anyway

i would have no issue driving the 4hrs to get the truck personally

I'm in Canada and have bought GMs (including my '21 and '24 HD), Fords, VW, Mazda, Can Am, Skidoo and Yamahas outside of town.  I have never had a warranty or service issue except for once when I was looking to buy something the local Yammi dealer tried to threaten me with "if it needs fixing in season, you might be last in line if you don't purchase here".  Wouldn't trust that dealer to wipe my dog's ass (if I had one) so that wouldn't have been a deciding factor.  You will be fine.

I have had the same experience. My last 3 Chevy trucks have have been purchased  “out of town” but I’ve used the local GMC/Buick/Cadillac dealer for service on my Duramax, warranty on my 1500 and now parts for my 2500HD. That stated, I’ve never purchased a vehicle from them.

Any feedback on how to get a deal done ? Again I have not bought a new truck  in 30 years . In Canada maybe things are different  . Wonder if they will move off of the MFSRP ?  I guess you have to pay for freight ,documentation etc.

Is it prudent to just ask what's the off the lot / out the door price  before taxes and go from there ? Say to them that's too much you need to do better ?

In British Columbia the Provincial Sales Tax is 10 % on a 2500 HD and 7% on a 3500 HD might be better to get a 3500 HD

Thoughts ?

Anyone have any more input on this topic ?   Also what fees /prices can I expect to negotiate on . PDI / freight ?

As I have not bought new in over 30 years . I imagine the price you see on the Factory Sticker is MSRP . Then they strt to tack on other fees . Is PDI / Freight included in the MRSP sticker price ?

Thank You !

Very often with dealer trades you pay the going prices, less any factory rebates.  Can't expect the dealer to go through all that, chasing after the vehicle and then sell it to you are sale price.  Also dealers in different regions pay different GM regional advertising fees (embedded on invoice) that the trading dealer wants to be reimbursed for so the wanting dealer may pay more for the vehicle then if they had ordered it themselves.   Freight and dealer fees are NEVER negotiated, that's one thing no dealer will ever agree to.

sticker includes everything except doc fee, TTL and addendums

I shotgun emails to several dealerships...10-20 and usually high volume ones but some smaller ones if they are advertising lower price than normal.....back and forth weed out the ones that just want to be difficult, narrow it down to few and go back and forth on price a few times and finally come to an agreement.....it takes bit of time and work

drive out and pick it up, in and out of the dealership in under an hour

bought several last few years and have a decent system going for purchasing....best part is I do it from home

paid 68k for 23 High country 2500 gas last April and sticker was 73.6k, I had to pay bit more in TTL than I originally thought back home in California but still pretty good considering dealers close to me were 5k over MSRP

you can find them, that same dealership is offering 5k off 24  models now while locally its MSRP.......look around and youll probably find some deals

look around

That's the key. I've had sales people look me dead in the eye and tell me they wouldn't drive an hour to save thousands, we're your local dealership! I did the shop around thing with lots of emails, phone call, and a few visits, ended up working with a dealership 3 hours away.

To be fair to the local dealership in this case, they told me straight away (this was a year ago) that they had such a line for '24 HD's, based on their limited allocations I should either wait for a '25 or go elsewhere, which was actually kinda refreshing.

Also, shop around for service. There are two places closer, but I drive an hour each way.

Exactly what I do. Email a bunch of dealers as far as I’m willing to drive and about 80% reply to come in or play other games via email and I immediately trash those emails and concentrate on the few who want to earn my business.
I won’t even step foot into the dealership without something firm in writing as to the breakdown of price.

in and out quickly once I do go in.
