Is my 2022 Chevy 3500 safe to drive?(Metal Ring Found on Driveshaft)

Recommended Posts

Hello!

Today as I was driving my truck (2022 Chevy 3500 High Country Dully Turbo Diesel) I heard a metal tapping sound in the cab of my truck after searching for it I found a metal ring on the part of the drive shaft that connects to the transfer case.

This is where I found the ring.

This is where I moved the ring onto the drive shaft near where I found it.

No clue why the pictures were uploaded upside down.

This is where I am temporarily storing the ring till the dealership can fix it.20240313_173316.thumb.jpg.8410563fd95d6075dc89a99cd66eef7d.jpg

If it matters, I tow with this truck 95% of its driving time. Empty weight while towing 17,200 lbs. This did happen while towing and I disconnected the trailer after I found the ring.

There are some threads from 2-3 years back where this was discussed. It’s a damping ring that has come loose. I believe it is part of a feature at the rear end of the driveshaft that is intended to damp torsional vibration.  I don’t remember if there was a simple diy fix.  Are you still covered by the warranty?

Yeah, I'm under warranty (35556 miles) and it runs out at 36k. They can't look at it till Monday and I'm honestly not too worried about the ring. I'm worried about the damage the ring did to the seal in my first picture. Will the drive shaft pop out with the rubber so damaged and/or will it cause catastrophic damage for me to continue to drive it? I need it for my business and I can't afford to be down for too long. I can easily add 300 more miles by Monday.

Thanks for the response!

Any leaks from picture #1? I believe that "boot" just covers the input shaft, you can see the weep hole for when the seal goes bad. If no leaks, tape the ring to the pumpkin and keep driving until you get it fixed. JMO.

Cut it off with a die grinder and keep it to give to the dealer. Insist that the transfer case output seal be replaced and the yoke inspected for any nicks or gouges from that ring bouncing around on it.
