2014 Silverado 6L80E transmition thermostat

Recommended Posts

Good Morning. I recently purchased a 2014 Silverado with a 6L80E transmition. It has a factory transmition cooler. I have been reading about bypassing the transmition thermostat to extend the life. My truck has 142,00 mile on it. It is a daily driver, and does little to no towing except for occasionly a light trailer. Would bypassing the thermostat really do anything to help exend the life of my transmition. Thanks

I also forgot to mention I live in North Dakota where the winters are COLD!!! Would that have any effect on the trans with the thermostat bypassed.

Yes, but not as long as it would have had this been done early on. Is this a V6 or a V8?

Never hurt automatics without thermostats since the early 60's. Not even the early 6L80's pre 2014 that hadn't one. I've run either bypassed or the GM low temp unit for most of my 2015's 177K miles. Live in northern Illinois. Gets minus mid 20's a few days each year here.

Is there a down side to doing this. The kit I am looking at is the Superior STL010

Not a single one.

IMO, biggest fox in your henhouse is the converter.

Never been a fan of flushes. In my opinion a simple pan drop and filter replacement is best. If your concerned about the fluid than have it tested and while the pan is down add a Superior products drain plug to it. Assuming the analysis comes back with nothing glaring you could do an easy drain and fill and have a pretty high percent of new fluid.

Just as a reference,  When I went through the Allison maintenance training they considered a drain and fill with a filter change along with 2 more spill and fills to be a complete changeover. If you were switching from Dex3 to a TES synthetic they stated that this method would be equivalent to a complete changeover and was suitable for moving to the synthetic service intervals.
