GM to recall hd's for tailgate dropping. Now includes some 1500's...

Recommended Posts

Got 2 emails today for my HD's for a recall for the tailgates dropping. I logged in the the MyGMC app for specific's and it shows it includes Canadians 1500's.

I'm betting USA 1500's will be included before it's over with...

Good to know. Mine just unlatched by itself after returning home from a carwash (probable  water intrusion). 2023 Trail Boss made in Silao MX.

Interesting. Friend of mine had a 2020 Sierra 1500 that would unlatch while driving. Dealer could never find anything. He got rid of it. Same cause maybe? I will keep an eye on my 23 Sierra 1500.

Does this apply to multiPro/Flex tailgates or just the traditional ones?

Power unlatching. Any with the button not the traditional handle.

  • 2 weeks later...

My 2021 tailgate power switch within the rear "handle" has indeed failed. No opening of tailgate except by dash switch or remote now.

Separate actual trips to two GM dealer's parts counters has found no replacement electric tail gate switch available and zero NOS switches available any where in Canada.

Inquiring minds not giving up, a call to a "jobber" parts outlet concludes the black plastic handle/housing is available for $70 but no electrical giblets are sold through them, including any kind of electrical latch switch.

I'm watching this one, mine hasn't unlatched it's self but I have had a few times where pushing the button to open hasn't worked and I had to use the remote to open it. Just turned over 3000 miles.

A call to your dealer service department will let you know if your truck is part of the recall. I was in for an oil change and tire rotation last week and asked the service writer to check. Mine is not in the recall.

Hopefully that up-graded tail gate switch is soon to be released!?

Now when I approach the truck with fob, that tailgate latch locks and unlocks like mad! No doubt the next issue will be a tail gate lock system mechanical failure due to being worn out!

"Duct" tape did OK except at freeway speed. Therefore "duct" tape has been cancelled. i removed the inner tailgate panel and disconnected the bogus switches' connector within the tailgate. Not a difficult job to isolate.

A quick call to my local GM dealer parts concluded no release date yet for the upgraded switch.

Put the panel back on the tail gate. Back to the freeway, without "duct" tape.

Party on.

dealer called me yesterday about a recall for programming of the headlights. We also discussed the open recall on this truck for the tailgate issue.

Seems there is still not a solution --- but the dealer is a method to disable the tailgate buttons so thay can no longer send the request to open to the BCM. (presumably they do the same as @Delta Tango mentioned and disconnect the switch)

Tailgate will still open using the FOB or the button inside truck.

For some this will be a reasonable temporary solution.

I have a 22 LTD with the power release tailgate.  Never had any issues with mine and this truck lives outside 24/7. I checked my VIN on the Chevy Recall lookup and it says there are no open recalls for my truck.

Still gonna keep an eye on it…
