GM to recall hd's for tailgate dropping...

I don’t plan on using silicone or duct tape, it was just a thought. I covered the two holes with a $3k ARE cap! :)

If I notice any water dripping in the holes with the cap door open, I’ll silicone it.

You should really spend more wisely. It only costed me like 2 bucks for my little tube of silicone. 3k to fill the holes seems excessive haha.

So the cap completely covers that whole pointless handle thing?

Considering what the truck cost, the cap is chump change! I’m on my 8th truck since 1984 and have had a cap on everyone one.

The rear cap door covers the top tailgate handle where the holes are located. I’ll try to get a pic after I go through the car wash in a few days when the weather warms up. Truck is filthy from our salty roads and traveling 35 miles each way to go ice fishing.

Of course I was kidding. My father used to use ARE caps on his business truck they are top of the line.

yeah if it stays dry there is no need to fill your holes although it takes literally a second for extra piece of mind.

the only negative to filling the holes is if it does rain and the truck is outside that little hand hold fills up with water but once you drop the gate it falls out. Not a big deal at all to me and I know not to let it splash on me.

Likewise. I have a cap on every truck I have owned.

My truck is still dirty but I took a couple of pics after I got off of the ice today. The rear cap door has a lip over the back of the tailgate. I don't think water can get in there going through the car wash. It doesn't look like dirt and salt made its way in. I'll see if its wet after going the  car wash this week. Before I got the cap, my truck was driven naked in the rain and sat in the rain while sitting on the dealer lot before I picked it up. Maybe its all moot, tailgate hasn't had any issues yet.

Oh yeah I think you’re good with that cap.
get that salt off though we all know that’s what destroys our vehicles

Went through the automatic car wash this morning. Checked the tailgate handle when I got home, was dry, no water got in. Safe to say that normal rain will not get in there. Car wash wasn't the greatest so I went back and went through the manual car wash and sprayed everything real good with high pressure. Got home and there was a smidge of water on the tailgate handle so I'll put some silicone in the holes when I get a chance.

With the cap rear door closed and not latched, I pressed the tailgate button and it would not open. I tried it a few times with the same results. After opening the cap rear door, the tailgate didn't open and was not able to pull it open but did push it in the closed position for good measure.

So my $3k cap "fix" keeps rain out of the tailgate handle but not high pressure direct spray at the cap door seal and keeps the tailgate from opening. :)

The TSB speaks of replacing two parts.  The Recall speaks of replacing the touchpad...are the switches and touchpad one in the same (one part)?

Also, how is there a stop sale on all of the new trucks when they had the new parts since July 2023 (TSB)?

TSB 23-NA-112

Recall

BTW...are there two threads on this same topic or is my mind playing tricks on me again!

The recall finally showed up in my GMC app. Looks like all they're doing now is having dealers disable the tailgate switch, if you choose to do so, then will replace the whole assembly when parts are available (who knows when that will be).

I was at my dealer Wednesday for an appointment. While checking in with the service advisor, he said there is an open recall. I acknowledged with a "yes, but there are no parts." He looked into it and said, "I was correct. I then told him I had already fixed it."

He looked up at me and said, "How?

I told him the story and would you like to see it.

We walked 10' over to tailgate, and I dropped the gate. It wasn't apparent to him. I pointed out the 2 blobs of black sillycone and told him there are 2 holes there that gm put in the finger pocket.

He looked at me and said he couldn't believe that gm had holes there and thought my 'repair' was ingenious. I asked him if he had heard of the fable of Tom Thumb and told him that I wasn't going to stand there and plug the holes in the rain with my thumbs, and it wasn't ingenious, but does the job.

I asked him to find out if'n gm was going to repair damages to the gates after the switches have been replaced.

Well, guess what happened today for the first time since they replaced my tailgate switch in July? I parked and it opened about 3 inches away from a concrete post—luckily didn't hit it. I guess I'll be going in and having them disable it. I wonder it anyone like @MTU Alum or @newdudeknows what the dealer does to "disable" it? If it's just unplugging the switch I'll do it myself, but if it's software-based I'll obviously have to take it in.

Cut the wires and heat shrink them sealed.  AKA disable your tailgate completely.  That is the current fix until there is parts in stock to replace them that they just updated to this week.

As I read it, the disable is optional for customer owned trucks.  Dealer inventory they are all being snipped.

Tailgate can still be opened from the switch under the radio on the dash and the key fob as well, so just the button on the gate is being disabled.

Wow, OK, thanks for the info. I called my service department and the advisor was saying he thinks you can just disable it in the settings somehow, but I'm sure he was thinking of the inner tailgate lockout function. I don't think there is a way to just lock out the entire tailgate. I may just do the wire cut method you mentioned if that's the official fix for now.

So is there clarification as to which tailgate types are being affected in the recall? I haven’t received any email or email mail yet. Mine has the button and tailgate drop function on the dash but it’s not a multi pro.

Both styles.
