6.6 gas battery replacement

Recommended Posts

Is there any complicated issues replacing the battery?  Hopefully not a dumbass question but is there anything complicated or different with the GM 6.6gas battery about swapping the battery? In other vehicles, where its in front, with two posts, and no "cover" it's a 10mm and 5 minutes.  This gasser is tucked in back and has a shroud over it. YouTube on the 1500's look awful, involved and hassel some, with all sorts of wires to disconnect etc.  Any tricks, tips ect with the 6.6gas?   Just trying to understand ahead of time.  Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks @Pryme, appreciate it.

Must've been others that have swapped the battery by now.  Figured I'd grab an AGM.  Anyone else with feed back?  Anything to be wary of?  Or is it just a simple swaparoo?  Likely over thinking it.

Here’s a picture of the top of my starting battery on my 2021 3500. I have an aux battery, 220 amp alternator, and an added wire to my camper on the 80 amp fuse, so yours might look a little different. I haven’t had mine out but I have disconnected the fuse block from the battery. I suspect that, to be able to pull the disconnected fuse block out of the way enough to lift the battery out, you may need to disconnect the small connector on the left side of the picture.  B44CF5B5-B1B7-4DD7-856B-FAD90639BBDD.thumb.jpeg.09eafb66a23244b18f5abe7d2e4357fc.jpeg

Thanks JR.  So you had that fuse / wireblock off?  How do you get it off?  Is there a bolt?

Mine looks just like that.  I pulled the top off with the two tabs and it revealed exactly what you show above.  I can grab that wire cover and it seems loosely mounted, like by a bolt somewhere.  As it does move but it sturdy.

Does anyone know what needs to happen with that "wire block" on top of the battery??  Proper way to remove?  Is there a timing thing being without the battery and these trucks?  Can the truck be without power for an hour or two while getting battery with no bad effects?  Some vehicles like vw can't be without power.

Thanks again everyone.

You just loosen the positive post connection and the fuse block lifts off, subject to the restriction of all the wires. Almost all of them connect on the engine side of the battery so as long as you disconnect that one outboard connector you should be able to lift and push aside the fuse block enough to get the battery out (after removing the battery hold-down).  It might help to have a second person help you manage the wires and block while you lift the battery - even more so when you go to put the new battery in.

When changing a battery and not wanting to lose all the memory and presets, I connect another battery to the vehicle via some small wires and alligator clips. That way the vehicle doesn’t even know the battery was changed.
