Just bought a 2024 Chevy 2500HD with electric tailgate.  Need to remover tailgate to carry truck camper when camping.  Can't figure out how to remove it.  And, if I unplug it, what do I lose besides the tailgate and backup camera.

Hi, I'm still learning the ropes myself, but as far as I know, disconnecting the electric tailgate may result in losing some integrated features beyond the obvious, such as convenience settings and potentially additional functionalities tied to the tailgate system. It might be worthwhile to explore aftermarket solutions for retaining certain features if needed.

  • Activate the Tailgate: Open the electric tailgate using the button or key fob.
  • Unplug the Tailgate Wiring: You'll need to disconnect the wiring for the tailgate’s electric functions (power release, backup camera, sensors). There should be a connector inside the tailgate, usually near the hinge or where the wiring goes into the truck bed. Carefully disconnect this plug.
  • Remove the Hinge Bolts: On either side of the tailgate, you'll find bolts securing it to the hinges. These should be either Torx or standard bolts, so use the appropriate tool to remove them.
  • Lift the Tailgate Off: Once the bolts are removed and the wiring is unplugged, you can carefully lift the tailgate off the hinges. It may be heavy, so having a second person to help is recommended.
