Abnormal brake wear

Recommended Posts

2019 AT4 5.3 with most options I.E. pedestrian braking, lane change etc. Started getting "new pads detected, re set monitor?" That then changed to "check brake sensor monitor" . Took truck to dealer that has performed all services. A check of the brakes reveals all inboard pads are wiped out. The fronts have approx 3mm of material left, while the rears are worse with approx 2 mm of material. The outboard pads are decent, what would be expected with a truck that has 21, 500 miles on it!!!!

Yes, it needs brakes on all four corners at 21, 500 miles. I did contact GM in regards to this. While I do understand I am well over on the 3 years of the new warranty having to replace the brakes with such low milage is NOT NORMAL. This is a truck used as a commuter vehicle, not towing, plowing, hauling anything. G.M., bless their hearts, was very polite and understanding as they told me they understood my aggravation and agreed the vehicle should not need brakes at such milage BUT since brakes is a wear item and the age of the vehicle they could be of NO assistance with the necessary repairs. They did comment that after I pay out of pocket for the repairs they may entertain an offer of some GM bonus points. Maybe I'm wrong, but the bonus points thing to me felt like an insult.

Has anyone else encountered abnormal brake wear? If so, what was the cause, and was a fix found? I have had four Sierra's, 1995 step side RC, 2004 Pro Sport ext cab, 2012 SLT ext cab and now the AT4. None of the others ever had an issue like this. (2004 rear disc brakes sucked) but even they lasted way longer.

When driving the truck everything appears normal, but needing to replace the brakes at 21500 miles is definitely not normal.

Started getting a slight brake shake just past 20k and just got back front trip and decided to change the front ones out at 33k as they were getting much worse. Wear was showing 89% left on the fronts. Changed rotors and pads out. Pads had alot left to them. Rotors looked good on the outside but the inner side had caked on bumps that was causing the shake. Was told from a guy I know at GM testing that its because of California mandates and its due to the compound that pads are using now.

Will do the rears shortly........CRap stuff

I had the same experience with my 2019 Elevation. Rotors started to rust a bit on the inside and burnt the pads off. I have never had a new vehicle wear out brakes so fast. Mine was a daily driver so they didn’t rust from sitting.
it was very frustrating when it happened because the aftermarket did not have rear rotors and GM dealer said they were back ordered for months. I asked the parts guy what do you do just scrape a one year old truck? I don’t know about everyone else but I have to go to work 6 days a week. I can’t afford to be without a vehicle for months. Thankfully my wife was able to find a dealer with rotors in stock. Even after the parts guy said nobody had them. You can guess which dealer i didn’t go to when I bought my 2023…

I went with Power Stop Z36 front rotor and pad truck and tow kit. After seeing what happened with the fronts I have the rear kit coming in for the weekend change out. Haven't done anything other than the break procedure on the fronts but they seem to do the job, we'll see....

Rears got changed out today, rotors looked like the fronts but not quite as bad, 93% left on wear pad indicator. A little bit different to do. Set the brakes into service mode, disconnected battery and got first side apart. Couldn't get caliper back on. Called a buddy of mine, had to use a 12v battery to retract piston fully  and then was able to compress it the rest of the way to get caliper back on. Reconnected battery, took out of service mode and no codes. Will do break in procedure on pads tomorrow.   So their done now
