Power-Retractable Assist Step Won't Retract - 2024 Denali

Recommended Posts

Started up my 2024 Denali Ultimate today and put the shifter in Drive and could immediately hear the driver's side power running board cycling back and forth from "out" position to "rear bed step" position.  After repeating that back and forth movement several times, the running board is now stuck in the out position and won't move at all to retract, or move to the bed step position with the switch at the rear of the running board.  Using the on-screen menu, can command the passenger side to move to the stow, deployed, or bed positions without issue so at least the right side is working.  🤨

Beyond the normal "unplug it" by disconnecting the battery to reset the computers, any other troubleshooting to figure it out before calling the dealer on Monday?  Looked in the Owner's Manual and don't anything that is obvious labelled fuse.  And if it was a fuse, would think both sides would stop working.

Update:  After 24 hours of letting it sit, the driver's side running board folded in as it should as soon as reverse was selected to back out of the driveway.  Putting it down as the second electrical gremlin in 2k miles; first was the back-up camera didn't work one day but also magically fixed itself.

I did notice when scrolling thru the screens different categories /setting on my 2024 Denali I believe under vehicle then  comfort there was an area where you can turn off / on side steps. Not saying this will fix your problem why it’s acting up just info for if it does it again and keeps running but not moving maybe you can turn it off and not burn out something or cycle on off maybe that would stop it running motor to move when it’s not moving.
I’m thinking of turning mine off for January / February when we get heavy snow and ice. Thinking there will be a build up of snow ice on those brackets that slide in and could cause a problem for them to retract all the way and possibly keep trying burning somethings out. Plus in down position I’m thinking it may give more protection from the Salt and snow / ice kicking up on rocker panels.

Power boards would freeze up all the time in winter on my old '11 Tahoe LTZ. Factory boards also.

IMO it's a southern option not north country.

Board motors trip out on overload and or auto reverse if they are obstructed.

Tri-Flow lubricant was the only thing that kept my boards working freely year-round also.
