Advice: Do Not Buy a 2024 HD Truck

After seeing a number of posts in online groups with similar electrical problems as mine, I did a poll of each group. 210 responded and 23 percent of them who had a 2024 reported electrical issues. I recognize this isn't a scientific poll, but this is significant for a truck that has been in circulation for such a short time. 

 

The problems vary greatly. My safety features work only intermittently. Blindspot detection, parking sensors, and lane departure all come and go. My parking brake also disconnects/reconnects, even after having the module replaced. It even locked up my trailer brakes once at a stop, and this was after the module was replaced. Others have had their trucks need to be towed, windows go up and down, and high beams only work for 5 seconds at a time. Those are just off the top of my head.

Sorry you’re having so many problems. No one wants to deal with that.

 

But it’s good to remember that many of the people who join forums or groups initially do it because they have a concern or problem with their vehicle they are researching. So your results are naturally going to be heavily skewed higher. And then on top of that, most people won’t take the time to respond to a survey unless they feel like it applies to them personally so again, your results will be heavily lopsided and lacking responses from the majority of people who haven’t had issues. A sample size of 210 also is pretty small since they crank out far mor than that every single day at each factory. That’s far less than even 1% of owners.

 

None of that is to question the reality of the problems you’ve had or that others have had. But to say it’s a widespread problem is a stretch.

 

Hope you get yours fixed or replaced or another solution that is satisfactory to your situation though.

Flint produces more than 1000 trucks a day. Each of those vehicles is validated before it is released for shipping meaning that it worked when GM took their hands off of it. I firmly believe that the technician training and the pay model for electronic repairs has not kept up with the current model, theres simply too few well trained techs. Clearly GM has work to do.

I don’t disagree with you. But, there does seem to be something with the 2024 in particular. I had a 2020 Custom with no problems whatsoever. I polled one 2020+ group (the rest were exclusively 2024), and that group has only one person with electrical problems, despite being the largest group. I really feel like there’s something to it. I’m sure they will get it worked out, but many of the new ones seem to have gremlins.

I’m pretty sure there were lots of electrical changes made to the 24. Something to do with GM having more control over it and being able to do more over the air updates ect. Others can explain better. Any big changes like that are bound to have growing pains.

my 23 has some weird signal losses at times, but i chalk it up to technology......current one has most features, but LT i had in 20 and 22 were pretty flawless.......have the hard hit from 2nd to 1st gear though on my new one.....

 

seems i have heard more problems about 24 than my generation but the dude above is correct....you only hear about the bad ones.....most dont even know or participate in forums....I've talked to quite a few "truck" guys and they have no idea about these forums

The gremlins are plaguing mine as well just had a case of the dead DRL blinker which mystically fixed itself on drive to dealer.  Truck is also using around 1.5 quarts of oil in 6k miles not towing which my '21 used none.  My brother in law has a '24 HD AT4 as well and his just went through a case of the blank screen and no turn signal function at all for a period, power cycle fixed.  It does seem there is certainly something going on with the "new to HD" global B CAN architecture.  My '21 Denali had zero issues with all the same options as my current Denali short of what the Ultimate now added over what was the Black Diamond edition. It almost seems like the CAN experiences some sort of interference which causes these sporadic electronic issues that manifest and then disappear with no trace.  I am certainly not an engineer but do work with technology and this certainly seems like a possibility of what is causing these gremlins to appear and then with an ignition cycle they disappear.  I am not at all impressed with the move to google/android for the infotainment system as the nav has let me down mean lock up or loading route or any other myriad of technical glitches a number of times.  Which is strange as my wife drives a '22 Volvo which also uses a Google/Android based system and her car has had 0 issues ever with the infotainment or nav systems.  Calls to On Star sometime can yield an update or temp fix to the issues but I have seen most do come back and then disappear again by the time you get in at dealer.  Just not overly impressed with the technical quality of my almost $100k truck :(.  I will likely by another but god I hope by the time I am ready for my next truck which will likely be '26 model year they have this all sorted out.

While I agree with the points made above, I'm also a believer in not buying vehicles the first year they are available after any major changes, especially changes to software and electrical systems. While there are not always major issues, the first year is going to be when most of the issues are going to happen.


That being said, I'm happy that my 2023 has not had any major issues and all of the safety systems appear to be working fine.

However, I just purchased a 2023 Tesla since I can charge it at work for free. It is essentially free transportation. The monthly payment is about the same as my monthly fuel bill was on my truck ($140 per week). But I've been having some issues with the nav system freezing and I can only unfreeze it by restarting the computer in the car. After looking online I discovered forum posts from 2020 about the exact same issue, and that's also where I learned how to fix it. The point being that some issues persist through many model years.

I get all the electronics in the HDs are "new" for 2024, but GM has had the same system in the 1500s since MY 2022, so we thought it'd be safe 😢. Mine has had map lockups quite a few times, but using Android Auto seems to be much better than the on-board maps. Now that my data trial is up, I've just been using AA anyway.

Me too.  Only nuisance is getting from AA to camera views or SiriusXM radio while underway.  Otherwise AA is far superior to the built-in Google.

Not to detract from the thread, but I have used AA in every vehicle I've had since it was available including my 23 GMC HD. There's nothing else that has ever worked as well as Google Maps for me, and up until August of this year I travelled the country for a living. My new Tesla does not support AA, but the built in nav system uses Google APIs and even says Google in the lower right-hand corner of the screen. However, it is definitely not the exact same as Google Maps has never frozen on me when using AA or even directly from my phone. I've also used them side-by-side just to test and they don't give the same routes all of the time.

GMC did not do a great job of integrating AA though. Like stated above it can be a nuisance to use other apps while using AA in my truck. It would also be nice if the HUD would support it as well. I still use AA over the factory nav though, even with these shortcomings.

Isn't the 2024 1500 exactly the same as the 2023 1500?  They were both updated late 2022.......

 

I have a 2023 1500 High Country with all the bells/whistles and have not had a single issue......flawless and not been back to the dealer for anything except oil changes. 

I'm going to go knock on wood, don't want to jinx myself!   '
